Foraging is a very good skill to have, sometimes necessary. But in the modern era, foraging is often times the sign of poor logistical planning, not crafty ways to obtain supplies. One can easily acquire vast quantities of food and supplies during peace time in at least the modern western world, maybe far harder in other places, but food is cheap and plentiful, supplies too, no excuse not to have some reserves of essentials. Also keep in mind hunter gatherers starved all the time, and in a bad situation, with the massively increased population in many areas, if everyone switched from agriculture to foraging quickly enough it could crash the natural system in your area and almost wipe out all edibles, including plants.
Keep in mind that even in bad situations where one cannot take large amounts of supplies with you, foraging is a poor method of staying ahead of things, even if you can forage, your long term outcome is poor until you can come into more substantial, and more secure supplies.
The American Indian, the Native American as they say, or Injun, didn't just lose because they were outnumbered by the white man, they lost to old, slow, but unstoppable western military tactics, and had good logistics to keep armies marching in the field forever, the hunter gatherers soon ran low on their meager supplies. Some Indian apologists will claim that the Indians were "brilliant strategists and tacticians" because they point out a few ambushes where they wiped out a unit. However, they lost every war and campaign because they dodged the battles they NEEDED to win, those of defending their camps, their women and children, and most of all their horses and supplies, tents, their mobile "eat off the land" strategy made them weak, not strong, their avoidance of set piece battles didn't make them "brilliant" tacticians, it showed how worthlessly retarded they were at war, they NEEDED to win major set piece defensive battles and them running like cowards wasn't smart military strategy, it was losing the campaign or war through acquiescence. Those who defended their farms, fields, forts, communities, supply depots, and could supply their large armies effectively weren't "slow and stupid, old fashioned western tactics" they were practicing "slow and smart, old fashioned western tactics that always won every time over the fast moving retards who chose battles they could win and did not matter, and ran scared away from battles they needed to win but could not".
People idolize the guerilla, but people forget the successful ones have backing from civilized people who have farms and food supplies, and can acquire other supplies for them. The starvin marvins in the mountain side don't win wars, tehy just harass government and people uselessly while they starve to death out in the woods.
I hunt, I enjoy it. Enjoy the meat. But with meat so cheap at the market, and busy with a job that makes money to buy that cheap meat, I have put off the self sustaining lifestyle even if I can do it where I live. Hard to find time and energy for everything, and if you don't kill game, you don't eat in the survival world. Learn the skill, know how to do it if you have to, but don't think its the world's greatest strategy.
