If they cared about quality it would be the Chinese, but since all they care about is selling as many tickets as possible to the lowest common denominator such as the Chinese it will probably be NK. Is fighting shit tier 60s soviet jets flown by a third world country exciting? No, but it is the go to "bad guy" for the media both for political reasons and simply because they are the only country that they don't see any potential market.

I predict the bad goys to be Russia-funded Iranian super hackers and alt-right facist soldiers supporting some generic dictator flying Su-57s and Su-47s while barrel bombing poor innocent LGBBQ rebel surgeons in Buttfuckistan.
Cruise will probably fly an F-35 equipped with an AI support waifu controlling drones and shit, there'll be a midair hacker duel where the Russiranians try to redpill the waifu through ebin menes but just as she is about to awake Cruise reminds her that freedom ain't free and to never forget the 6 million americans killed on 9/11, followed by both of them using the F-35B hover nozzle to make the Russiranian aircraft chasing them overshoot right below them while setting it on fire in the process due to the F135 engine exhaust temperature.

Mildly OT question but why did the Navy only get 50 or so F-14Ds?
Was it so (((Politicians))) could push for the Tomcat's removal from service citing the large numbers of comparatively outdated and aging F-14As?
The D version from my limited understanding seems more or less on par with the F/A-18C from a technical standpoint, it shouldn't have been too difficult to upgrade it further down the line unlike the older versions.

Νοπε. It was vastly superior in everything minus operating cost. (and against real adversaries it would be more cost effective than F/A-18C/Ds that would drop like flies against anything more modern than a MiG-25).

No? Did you even watch Top Gun? They had F-14As and were fighting "MiG-28s" (aka F-5Es with black paint). The only reason we even got any action scenes in Top Gun was because they never launched the damn Tomcats with AIM-54s, which would have completely slaughtered most adversaries beyond visual range.

AIM-54 were not particularly effective against nimble aircraft unless not detected, and I believe the MiG-28 was supposed to be a MiG-29/F-20 equivalent which would mean both missile awareness and excellent maneuverability, particularly for defensive maneuvers thanks to top of the class instantaneous turn rate and AoA for both similar aircraft.

One question for the insider. Is part of the official Navy policy to publicly shill for the wrong choices the high command made like shilling in favor of Super Hornet and F-35C over Legacy Hornet and ASF-14/Quickstrike Tomcat?

First, its not all big navy fucking up with decisions, its a lot of backroom deals with politicians and the sort.
Legacy F-18s are affectionately referred to as "legacshits" in the navy. Huge swaths of what remains of them are total hangar queens. This is mainly Cs and Ds. The marine corp still runs As, which are very noticeably sturdier, at least the airframe. Long story short, the only thing legacys have over supers is the ability to go supersonic under their own power.
Now the F-35C, and all variants really, is another matter entirely. That is just pure kikeheeb martin jewry. The JSF project was designed from the ground up to be a gigantic money sink that just so happened to eventually produce a jet. I have a few stories from friends at pax river about the woes of the 35s development. Some design oversights were just simply baffling/hilarious/depressing.
As for the 14, I never worked on one, I had only heard nightmare stories about them from maintainers. Miles and miles of wires, having to do splices on the run every event, that sort of thing. Given how much trouble the F-14s were to maintain and how much replacement parts were costing towards the end of their lives compared to 18s, its not at all surprising they chose to do what they did in that context. It is a shame we'll never really know how good the ASF-14 could have been, though.

Oh come on! That would not have been that bad on a 4.5+gen derivative. The Tomcat was the first 4th gen fighter and the only variable-wing Multi-role Air Superiority/Interceptor + secondarily Strike fighter in existence, it was kinda expected to be an attentionwhore and she fully compensated for it.
>The marine corp still runs As, which are very noticeably sturdier, at least the airframe
How comes so? Attempt for weight reduction in later variants?
Thanks for enlightening me btw. Before your post I was a mild legacy hornet apologist.

Yes I think so, the materials in As are much harder, and heavier, but its thanks to that that they're still able to fly, ++ style. There's other features that were removed going from A to C/D too, though all the ones I can think of were basically useless.
