Hey everyone just got myself an AR (my first one) and don't know a whole lot about the world of upgrading it. I have a STAG ARMS STAG-15 with a Samson Star-C floating rail. Just would like to know what I can put on my hand guard rail. What can and cannot fit, what is a good quality name to look for in attachments (grips, flashlights, lasers, and sights). Anything that would really make it better for home defense. I have been shooting since I was 6 so I know a bit more than the average person just the AR platform is new to me so any other insight would be helpful. Thanks.

Two screws hold on the gas key to the top of the bolt, and if they are not properly staked they can work loose. Staking just means using a hard pointy tool to smush the metal where the screw and the gas key come together, and this prevents the screw from rotating loose.

Don't sweat the damage to the key, it and the screws are easy/cheap service items.

You must have 2 things: sling and flashlight. Imho best reasonably priced light is Surefire G2X Tactical and sling SOB B-Sling.

After you spend your money on them you can purchase an optic. Affordable optics with good reputation are Holosun and Primary Arms

Tourism increases in key european cities,Happy meals get to learn gun safety which should please the bleeding hearts,Big macs get to blow off some much needed steam, and Burger-Yuro relationships will definitely improve, sure maybe not political ones but social relationships between the countrys populace definitely would.

If you've never driven a car would you rather practice on one with manual or automatic transmission? When you have a rifle there are already many thing you have to practice. Why not make a life easier with optic before switching to irons?

377314 No.567823

>>567781

Quad rails aren't all that shit. Yes they're heavy but are retard strong compared to the thin modular rails and also have the sharp ass rail grooves that can act as grip. With that said the classic two piece plastic handguard set with a rail section bolted on or even the magpul will be lighter and will deal with heat better than any metal handguard. but if you don't want to kludge toomuch shit on the all you really need is the sling swivel on the gas block, some kind of light mount. If you just can't live without a forward grip of some kind then another rail section on the bottom side for whatever (which most likely won't be needed with the classic handguards as it has a gradual taper making it less awkward to angle your wrist).

They have different uses. Single-point is for if you're actively using the rifle, two-point is for carrying it comfortably on your back. Ideally, you would get a sling that can be used as either; Fagpul makes a couple of these, the premium option being the MS4 sling. I want to get one of those, a stock with a QD mount, and a QD mount to go on the rail for full one-to-two-point functionality with quick, convenient conversion and/or detachment.

If you're low on cash and just want a sling, get a basic two point.

That is most achievable by having your advantages be on yourself, rather than your gun. Instead of needing to look through the scope for vision in the night, use goggles so that you can see the night all around. That allows you to use iron sights instead of having to attach something more on to your weapon, which will only make it more of a burden.

I'm building a 20 inch w mlok right now but my HD/range/everyday/SHTF is a stock colt "m4" the LE6920 I prefer simplicity over tacticool.

You'll want a light. Whatever is bright and has good reviews, lots of options with this. Just make sure it is over 1 inch in size or it won't work with the little thing that mounts it to the rail on the gun.

Good shit OP, enjoy your AR and spent lots of time getting comfortable shooting it in every position, speed and range you possibly can.

Can an ar fag help me out? I'm looking to buy one but don't know too much about custom builds. A guy would be willing to sell this build for 750, is this a good deal?

>Custom Billet PSA AR – low serial number, matching billet set, 16 inch socom mid length melonite 5.56 barrel, muzzle brake, upgraded grip, 15 inch lightweight free float rail, premium PSA CL and tested BCG, nickel boron EPT trigger, and magpul ACSL stock. The scope is a $300 brunton 1.5-5 CQB scope, just mounted on the gun, never been used or fired

c0703c No.568782

>>568775

>Custom Billet PSA AR

I have no idea what the hell the "custom" comes from, but PSA's receivers are generally okay. Not great, holes are sometimes a bit rough but serviceable. Billet isn't intrinsically better than forged, but the fact that milling a receiver is more expensive than forged will imply that quality is a little higher in other places as well, because it's a "premium" product

>16 inch socom mid length melonite 5.56 barrel

SOCOM barrels are heavier for no real benefit. Can't say anything definitive about it without knowing the manufacturer. If it's PSA be wary, they have QC issues with their barrels.

>muzzle brake

Generally speaking, muzzle brakes are obnoxious for everyone around you because they spew gas out laterally and increase the intensity of muzzle flash. The recoil-reducing benefits for 5.56 are minimal, because 5.56 isn't a hard-recoil round.

>upgraded grip

This means nothing. Could be anything from a MOE grip to some expensive-ass custom job (probably not the latter).

>15 inch lightweight free float rail

Free float is better than the alternative, ceteris parabus. He didn't mention m-lok or anything so it likely doesn't have it.

>PSA CL and tested BCG

PSA's BCGs are shit, avoid.

>nickel boron EPT

Actually not bad for what it is but there are better options.

>magpul ACSL stock

Also not bad if you want a tacticool stock with a nice cheekweld

Can't say much about the scope, and since it looks like Brunton isn't making rifle scopes anymore no one online is either. Overall, I'd say it's a so-so deal if you plan to use the scope, and are prepared to switch out either the barrel or the BCG if they start to act up.

44b442 No.568795

>>568782

Woah, thanks for the breakdown! Just what I was looking for. Sounds like a so-so deal for 750 then.

I'm torn between buying a used ar, usually a custom build, or just getting a basic m&p sport or ruger. With the sport, I'd want to replace the handguard and put optics on, so I'm spending the same amount anyway. The problem is I just can't make sense of these guys' build descriptions because I don't know enough about the brands and parts.

c0703c No.568799

>>568795

You could always try building yourself. If you're patient and wait for the parts you want to go on sale it can end up being the same or cheaper than buying used, and you get exactly what you want on top of that. When I was putting my AR together I got subscriptions to the sale notifications for Primary Arms, PSA, righttobear, monmouth reloading, joe bob's, and a few other parts vendors and just waited for the right deals to come up. If you have the patience for this, I'd personally recommend it, because putting your own raifu together is a fun and informative experience. Also, remember that the market is still in something of a 'panic-buy' mode ever since the Florida thing and Trump's rhetoric about upping restrictions, and a lot of people are taking that opportunity to sell of parts of their collection for inflated prices. Parts vendors are taking advantage of this too, but only for lowers and complete rifles, not all the other parts. Once this shit blows over and Hogg's 15 minutes of fame dry up prices on lowers and complete rifles will go down again. Buying a starter rifle like the Ruger also works, because you can upgrade it as you go along and still get much of the experience that building your own will give you.

ea08cf No.568801

>>568799

Yeah, its hard not to get caught up in the panic buy mode with all the ballet initiatives floating around. Building one sounds fun, I work with wood alot and enjoy putting stuff together. I just need to study up on what parts have a good reputation, ect. AR parts are an intimidating market to start into.

I like the idea of getting the ruger and upgrading as I go. *dumb question* but do those entry level rifles have proprietary shit or is it easy to swap parts in and out?

c0703c No.568804

>>568801

It's not hard to swap parts at all. In fact, since "entry level" for ARs pretty much means "mil-spec", the budget builds will always be upgrade-friendly; sometimes moreso than more expensive, special snowflake guns with piston systems, or custom-billeted receivers, or what have you.

Honestly means nothing in the AR world assuming it's not some limited run collectors meme rifle or some C&R colt sp-1 and no PSA is not making collectors shit at least ones people will give a fuck about.

>15 inch lightweight free float rail

I'm not sure but just in the interest of peace of mind ask if it's some in house PSA thing or it was made by some other well known company like troy, midwest, or yankee hill. If it's made in house check the barrel nut with a magnet if possible. When barrel nuts are made of aluminum you'll want chunky fat fucks usually but steel SHOULD not always be more durable. I'd usually only trust yankee hill style fat aluminum barrel nuts as opposed to some other brands but just know that if it is yankee hill it will most likely need a special tool to remove it which is about $30.

CHECK THE FUCKING LOW PROFILE GAS BLOCK BOTH WITH A MAGNET AND FOR DIMPLES NEXT TO THE SET SCREWS FOR PROPER STAKING IF HE SAYS RED LOCK TIGHT WAS USED TAKE THAT SHIT OFF AND STAKE IT PROPERLY OR ELSE YOU GET A BOLT ACTION RIFLE IN ABOUT 1000 ROUNDS OR LESS

>If it's PSA be wary, they have QC issues with their barrels.

Doesn't PSA source their barrels from FN?

>PSA's BCGs are shit, avoid

You should see some radical firearms bolts. A swap of the bolt itself should do it as it is a part people should have on back up. As for the carrier itself it should be fine, just check for MiM marks almost looks like those round plastic casting marks on toys and is generally considered shit for parts dealing with shearing(?) type of movement not too sure take with a big ass salt pill. PSA has flipped between good and shit for several years could also be people buying the mystery unbranded shit or more likely PSA being lazy when it comes to their phosphate BCGs marketed to poorfags just to give you a bigger "fuck you buy our silver shit" but their premium bolt line should be good, just check for

proper staking and even then just fire it till it breaks and replace as necessary.

>never been used or fired

look at the shell deflector for brass stains/discoloration or nicks, if there is nothing then it either is true or so low a round count he barely broke it in if at all.

>>568801

Ruger has a proprietary delta ring that makes the removal of the plastic hand guards easier but it should function with any armorers wrench. but honsetly you should invest in a light mount and picatinny rail section for the plastic hand guards classic or magpul style and buy ammo, a sling and a good optic (trijicon MRO ~$450, Aimpoint PRO ~$410 or CRO ~$390 or holosun/primary arms ~$120-210). Metal hand guards may look cool and certainly make your rifle shoot more accurately but you can still reliably hit targets ~300 yards away with the plastic while still being lighter and not burning your fingers after a bunch of mags. Free floats are cool but don't get caught up in the bullshit or else you end up buying for looks rather than what you would use it for. Seriously think about what you want to do with it or you'll end up like me and having 2 extra free float uppers but having no real use for them while wanting an old style dissiaptor with pencil barrel for the weight savings and late 80s early 90s radicool factor.

737f0c No.568814

>>568806

Thanks for all the info. A lot of it is over my head for sure but another *dumb question,* what is the difference between putting the picitanny rail to replace the plastic, and the free float handguard? What makes the handguard free float vs. A different type of rail?

c0703c No.568836

>>568814

Free-floated handguards never touch the barrel at any point, and are mounted directly to the upper receiver using the barrel nut. Thus, the barrel appears to "float" within the handguard. The two-piece handguards are secured at the front end with a ring, that clamps on to the barrel just behind the gas block. This can cause inaccuracy because the more shit is hitting your barrel, the more you screw with barrel harmonics, and thus less consistent your shots. This can become exacerbated by the fact that the sling usually attaches right below gas block as well, so if you put tension on it you screw with barrel harmonics even more. Like >>568806 said, the difference really isn't noticeable within a couple hundred yards for the casual shooter. Another thing to consider is that almost all of the free float tubes out there are aluminum, which means they'll conduct heat and get hot. There are carbon fiber ones out there, but that shit's expensive.

377314 No.568848

>>568814

No I'm saying get a small bolt on pic rail for the plastic that will let you mount a flashlight like in the link.

https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1003236059/gg-and-g-ufir-under-forend-integrated-rail-for-ar-15-rifle-and-m4-handguard-aluminum-matte

There are other smaller ones or you could even buy a rail section for those m-lok or key mod systems but drill holes on the plastic and kludge it on there. This will allow you to mount a flashlight (in my opinion the only real attachment needed if you could have only one). As for free float basically it's a way to prevent outside interference from fucking with your rifles barrel harmonics let the barrel do it's micro vibrations on its own don't try to stop it or else yo can cause your next shot to go off the point of aim for most people they will never see any real substantial difference especially if you're setting up a close range home defense/fuck off my property carbine as opposed to a marksmen rifle or bench rest shooter.

>TLDR BUY M-LOK FOR COOL GUY HAND GUARDS BUY QUAD RAILS TO BEAT PEOPLE TO DEATH WITH BY DROPPING IT ON THEM FROM WAIST HEIGHT OR AS AN IMPROMPTU CHEESE GRATER LIKE TORTURE DEVICE

Most free float hand guards these days are made for attaching crap all over it or configuring to whatever you want a thing to be placed at. It was basically the answer to guys getting tired of using hose clamps and zip ties to kludge shit on their plastics mostly fixed these days with magpul MOE hand guards or like in link bolt on pic rails for classic style so big fat fucking QUAD RAILS became a thing letting you slap shit all over the place. Down sides are that they're BIG FAT FUCKING QUAD RAILS up sides is that unlike other systems the only thing you need to worry about falling off your rifle from improper attachment it the pic mount on the item itself and they tend to be retard strong while having shard jagged edges that dig into your hand for better grip.

Soon after a solution for BIG FAT FUCKING QUAD RAILS being fucking heavy and huge came out and that was proprietary mounting systems like what LWRC still makes. It became the hot shit where you buy THEIR pic rail section and bolt it on using a tiny screw wherever you need a bit of rail and not everywhere. Its still gay because you end up with a big ol' rail chunk and whatever mount still adding size to the overall profile causing your object to jut out and also you need to buy their bullshit priced rail piece. People got tired of proprietary shit and it would cost too much for manufacturers to make their mounts for a specific companies dimensions so now KEYMOD and M-LOK became a thing. Both are competing systems that allow manufacturers to make an item using this semi universal mounting system allowing you to buy a pic rail section and place it where you need it or you could buy a direct attach mount for the item so you end up with only one item attaching to the rail and not going through two bolt on pieces (pic rail with (insert mount system here) to rifle then item to pic rail) while also lessening how much it juts out.

For whether or not you should buy M-LOK or KEY MOD you should probably stick with M-LOK. I haven't really seen makers of KM attachments letting up and many still support it but ML apparently hangs on better in a Gov't test where they basically just drop rifles and see if the things came loose. Either way always use thread locker on your screws even if you get some quick detach lever fancy thing.

Since this appears to be the dedicated AR thread, any recommendations for a complete piston upper? The Adams Arms P1 seems to be the most economical one out there, I'd rather have the P2 but can't justify $900 on it. Anything else out there I haven't found yet? I'll be putting it on a stripped Anderson lower, LPK is tbd.

Also thinking about getting an ar10 lower to save for a later build, thought about picking up a 10mm lower for a pistol build. Should I get both or is 10mm a meme caliber?

c0703c No.569143

>>569139

>I'll be putting it on a stripped Anderson lower

Be careful, as >>559701 shows not all of them are good. Adams Arms are good as far as piston lowers go, but I have to ask, why go piston at all? The reliability issues of DI are a meme holdover from Vietnam. You're also going to make the cam pin gouge scores into your upper, and get slightly reduced accuracy from barrel harmonic fuckery. If you prefer a short-stroke piston gun anyways because of personal reasons, check out the 805 Bren or some other rifle designed from the ground up to be a piston gun.

10mm is a good meme, and should perform really well in a PCC/not-SBR package. Whether you get that or the AR-10 is personal preference. If you're buying plinking ammo both will cost about the same to shoot.

Just buy from a good vendor and you'll be fine. Aero Precision is bretty gud and aggressively priced. As for your friends, I hate to break it to you but they're probably poorly educated neo-fudds who completely bought into the "lol rifle shits in its mouth" meme. Unless you want to suppress or have some other niche use where a piston will benefit you generally shouldn't bother sticking one on an AR.

000000 No.569220

>>567747

Attachments need to be added with purpose in mind. Sling and optic are necessary on any gun. Primary Arms is an excellent optic brand choice with good prices. A light is another necessary attachment for home defense. You need to know what you are shooting at. You can use a cheap brand sling up to VTAC, and the light can be a high end TLR down to a 30$ light with rail mount. Optic is where the biggest portion of cost should come after the price of the gun itself. Get a good one! In my eyes the price of an Aimpoint, Eotech, or Trijicon is not worth the ammunition I could have bought.

A forward grip can aid in handling the gun; Magpul is a great brand for furniture. And a laser can be used for aiming without shouldering, but I don't recommend that.
