You can only project air power across the globe if you can get fighters across the globe to maintain air supperiority, which either means having lots of allies (so you are not truly independent) or having carriers.
Carriers require complete control of a small area of the seas, unless you want your multi billion dollar/thousands of seamen sunk in the first month of war.
90% of all resources are transported across the oceans. Unless you want your military production to shut down as soon as a war breaks out you need a navy.
The navy is just as important as it has always been. You can win a war without, but winning a worldwar without one is like playing hard mode.
