The issue is that penetration alone won't kill unless you hit a vital organ, hydrostatic shock does most of the leg work. The needle might break skin and cause bleeding, but I can't imagine it would cause any shock, and it won't have the force to bypass bone which protects most vital organs like the heart or brain.

Where did you see that in his post? There's no question .22lr would be far more effective in killing somebody, even the Metro 2033 tier super airguns require precise shot placement. .22lr still relies on hydrostatic shock though, and unless your dart/arrow is firing at over 1,800 fps, it won't have nearly the same effect.

An 8 grain pellet at 900 FPS produces significantly less force and shock than a 40 grain projectile at 1200 FPS. Killing capability of .22LR is less than stellar as is even then. http://www.chuckhawks.com/handgun_power_chart.htm Not even breaching 40% from a 6 inch barrel. Only superior to the .25 auto.

Bullets don't kill through hydrostatic shock, they kill through bloodloss. All hydrostatic shock does is momentarily disrupt the CNS causing the target to momentarily collapse; it may have a chance to get up.

The order goes like this:

>bullet hits the target

>hydrostatic shock downs the animal/person

>animal/person bleeds out

>loses consciousness due to bloodloss

>dies because of bloodloss

Also hydrostatic shock has several velocity cutoffs for different calibers.

Below these velocities with respective bore sizes hydrostatic shock is negligible.

You could probably get an air soft gun that is loaded with CO2 and have it shoot darts, though it probably wouldn't work very well. It would be a much better idea to try to find a way to load it up with small ammunition, since it wouldn't be as good as a real gun but it would work more than shooting darts.

There's no point getting excited over it. Most of the time anything remotely close to lethal gets lumped in alongside firearms. If the US goes for sweeping new gun control, air guns aren't going to be a loophole, at least not for long.
