What exactly is the difference between the T-72B3 and the T-90S? Even really good tank blogs confuse them constantly from the front.

First: Both pics are T-90MS.

Second: what tank blogs?

Because the list of shit different is pretty long (like gun, engine, systems…).

Visually they're very similar (though the turret shape is different but it's hard to see on most photos).

>if russians have similar names for things that makes them similar

Pic one is T-22.

Pic two is T-22M, with M standing for modernized.

It's almost impossible to overstate how different these two aircraft are, it's like comparing the Buccaneer and the Lancer.

Russians don't care about names, they enjoy misnaming things, their prototypes are all assigned nigh-random alphanumeric digits. It couldn't be completely random, because that would make it easy to ignore the number… ooooh no, its only partly random, so analysts have to recognize and memorize the non-random part, yet ignore the random/misinformation part. Russians are cunts.

tbh I always liked Tu-22 more than the Tu-22M.

That's because Tu-22 and Tu-22M ARE two different planes, they called them "Tu-22 modernized" either to fuck with Khrushchev (which didn't like bombers) or the US (or both) by pretending it wasn't a new plane but just an upgrade of their existing naval bombers, but they never were.

It doesn't help that T-90 itself has more variety in its 20 years of existence than any other tank. For example the "top" answer here >>559078 ignores the fact that T-90 entered service with a cast turret and Kontakt 5 armor, whereas is now using a welded turret (massively improved passive armor) and Kaktus+Arena.

Comparing the two makes sense, but saying they're the same or acting as if there's no difference between the two is dumb. T-90 has a newly invented engine, a newly invented FCS, a newly invented cannon (based on T-80), new passive armor, and new energetic armor. It also included as built-in the concept of active protection systems pioneered way back in the 80s. Every nut and bolt is different, even the tracks used a different design that allowed them to be lighter and easier to repair, they aren't interchangeable. The main hull was modified to expand carried fuel, make it safer for the crew, it's about a meter longer than the T-72. The construction methods were also changed, instead of doing casting they did welding, which brought costs down (among other things).
