Assuming you aren't talking about a Swiss style government run militia I suspect that the current environment makes any kind of effective citizen militias impossible. Advances in surveillance, particularly in the field of communications interception, make it hard for me to see how a group like the Green Mountain Boys, let alone the Sons of Liberty, could operate without explicit government sanction. Tack on the fact that government agents have been hugely successful in infiltrating any such organizations and it gets even harder. (Apparently that was the real reason the feds didn't force the issue at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge; they already had multiple agents inside) My starting assumption is that any "independent" armed group above the radar enough for me to hear about is either watched very closely or outright controlled by government agents. Modern states don't seem to trust their citizens very much. I really don't foresee a political situation where a Western government would even permit groups to organize independently for government service like you saw at the beginning of the American Civil War.
I'm obviously discounting things like cartels, autodefensas, or the militias in unstable states like Syria. Not sure if that's beyond the scope of OP's intended discussion.

If anything, your close friends/family are the most likely ones to rat you out because they think they're helping you/preventing further harm from coming to you. That aside though, a lot of militias require a "letter of recommendation" from a member or member's family to join, or they require dues, that you acquire your own firearms, etc. so that they don't get complete strangers very often. I know one of our cucked Colorado Militias won't let you bring an ATF-regulated weapon to their sessions even if you have the appropriate forms and shit because they're scared shitless that one of their members might be working for the ATF or that it will be interpreted as treason if the government sees them with automatic firearms or silencers.

Its not a question of respect for the law. You need people who are willing to martyr themselves for a greater cause. There are very few of those people available right now, white or otherwise.
Ironically, the best group to recruit from are whites, but not older guys. I've had plenty of success recruiting guys out of high school and college. Youngest guy in our group is 16. The guys (there are no women) who usually join are the type that would've gone into .mil but were either too jaded or too smart to go in. They are usually loners and are always right wing. As an aside, don't let women into your group.
The point is to have a core mission and ideology, and repeatedly state that if there is action, the whole group will be involved and that it will lead to all of our deaths. It sets the tone and keeps the LARPers out. Feds get their informants through drug crimes and weapons violations. They don't actually send in agents. If you are going to recruit, you should recruit people who are law-abiding to minimize the chance of informants. Always run background checks via several systems, always put new members in probation and watch them act in their daily life.
As far as the leftist militias go, they are worthless. We've already penetrated the few in our area, and all are in absolutely terrible shape. Their arms are usually bought by one ideologue and their training consists of shooting at stationary targets 50 ft off the firing line. There was more talk about who was fucking who, drinking and tumblr shit than there was about guns or tactics.

Since leftism is the religion de jour currently, it was easy to find militant left-wing groups on facebook and the local college campus. From there, it was go to one of their meet houses a professors house and observe them.

The problem with that system in my experience comes with increasing the amount of exposure to people who may or may not be ready for the level of violence that is necessary. Who's to say one of the fudds won't rat when the feds come snooping asking for a certain member of the inner group? Its inefficient and insecure and can lead to gross overestimation of militia capability. The smarter way is to have self-sufficient squad-sized cells that operate independently during normal times and only come together for certain events. All knowledge is need to know, people who come in don't know the people in the other cell in across town. During training meets, license plates come off, masks are on, and interactions between cells are controlled and OPSEC rules are enforced.

Why would I do that? The primary goal of the mission is to obtain information and degrade and disrupt their operations when the opportunity arises. I'm not going to compromise my guys just so some cops can play catch and release when their lawyer calls. That being said, if we were able to figure out that they were planning something major, action will be taken.

The point is that any activity we take that requires us to use lethal force will make us enemies of some group that is capable of killing us, whether its police, gangs, leftists, etc. Things will escalate until we are all dead or in prison. We don't go out and protest or march. Its outside of our scope and there are plenty of other groups that do that. The militia is solely for organizing lethal action, not protesting.
What this all means is that we don't actively go out seeking to start fights and that everything we do is purposeful. Any decision to act violently by our group needs to be calculated and worth the risk. Its about creating a mindset of martyrdom, not literally saying that we will die if we do anything.

More likely than not they'd be coaxed into being cannon fodder, either handing out guns to them to go and seize the memes of production, or just telling them where to stand and protest for money.
