But logistically speaking, it makes more sense to build a multirole piece of equipment and swap out modular parts on a per-mission basis, no? Isn't that the whole point of rail systems?

Yeah but the AR as it stands is already that with swapping uppers going between 5.56 or a little bigger round or barrel length changes but the base will always be a type of cartridge that has to fit within the mag-well or cavity in the upper (for the most part shit like 458 being an exception sort of). The 5.56 as we have seen in Afghanistan has a large defect and that is it lacks range and power for shooting across mountains/hills, what we really need is not a complete return to 7.62 or something similar, what we need is moth balls and cosmoline for the rifles/gear not being used or have things like "mountain" divisions that actually train on and use gear for mountains. A good base with the ability to change everything would be nice but cost would go through the roof (windham weaponry has something like this mainly with swap able mag wells for AK mags and maybe 308 mags). An AR10 would be a good choice as the other weapon to take out in the situation of a new battlefield that is radically different from places with 200-300 yard averages. Best of all as we have seen, it has been converted to a bunch of different cartridges so if a new snowflake ammo came out we most likely wouldn't need to dump all these rifles but just rework the upper or sell them off (most likely as it would be faster).

i like his anecdote of seeing a GWACs as the only survivor of accidentally run over by a truck along with a bunch of aluminum lowers. took some lessons from their build but i went my own way on a lot. i think my forged 7075 lower will have a longer service life, and I want to use a UBR2.

got this https://armaspec.com/product/stealth-recoil-spring/ rather than the expensive JP arms captive they suggest. it's a nested spring setup like some automatic pistols use.

the things i like most in their build are the faxxon stress relieved pencil barrel, the KE arms trigger, and (any) good freefloat with low pro gasblock. i don't care for the geissele charging handle but i'm not sure what i'm going to use.
