In WWII, media wasn't just censored, it was integrated into the war effort. This was partly voluntary.

In Vietnam, no such thing happened, because the military/politicians didn't think they'd need propaganda. They failed to realize that the media's interests lay against those of the military, since sensational (read: false) stories of defeat "vindicated" draft dodgers sold well. They let the 5th column journalists in, and they were too far entrenched by the time the military realized what a mistake they had made.

Ho Chi Minh was a commie from the get-go. He was in the French Communist Party as early as the 20s.

His faction was always communist, sometimes explicitly and sometimes kept hidden, but it was always somewhere in their structure.
