Imagine if someone started an assault rifle thread with this question:

>Are the AR-15 and the Kalashnikov the greatest assault rifles in the world?

Also, I still believe that heavy machine guns are simply obsolete as infantry weapons, because for the same weight you can lug an automatic grenade launcher to the battlefield. And if you really need the power of the cartridge, then you have anti-material rifles.

I totally understand your automatic grenade launcher fetish Hunanon but it doesn't mean that HMGs are obsolete. At close range like battle of Mogadishu where you can't afford to blow shit up with friendlies very close HMGs are perfect.

>if you really need the power of the cartridge, then you have anti-materiel rifles

US Barrett M82 and Russian ASVK are both anti-materiel rifles and they use the same ammo as their main HMGs. Now, if by anti-material you mean shit that's over 20mm then those beasts are heavy as fuck and much more expensive than trusty HMGs

or you could have BOTH

d48096 No.540826

>battle of Mogadishu

I've said that they are obsolete as infantry weapons. As far as I know all the M2s used in Mogadishu were mounted on vehicles.

>they use the same ammo as their main HMGs

Indeed, that's what I wanted to say. Even the lightest version of the Kord is 25.5kg, meanwhile the ASVK is around 12kg. So if you only want to put a few rounds of 12.7x108mm on a target, then you are better off with one grunt hauling one ASVK into battle, instead of a whole team bringing a Kord.

>>540824

But why would an infantry platoon need both weapons at the same time? Again, you are better off with a team bringing an AGL and a grunt an anti-material rifle.

The main advantage of HMGs over GMGs is penetration of cover, still a light autocannon offers both at the cost of greater recoil.

fedb09 No.540940

>>540938

HMG advantage dates back to WWII, they could cheaply sling a lot of lead for an air to air range that can be aimed at with the naked eye.

True, I was just talking about infantry support as missiles and autocannons rule the skies now.

000000 No.541001

As Hunanon has said I think heavy machine guns are obsolete. The raison d etre of both M2 and DShK was low level anti-aircraft defense and anti-armor capability. They were considered all but ineffective in the former role during World War II and the latter role is now covered by the multitude of LAWs and ATGWs. The infantry fire support role is better performed by the more mobile AGL esp AGS-17/30 and QLZ-87. For use on vehicles, on ring mounts and RWS weapons such as 14.5 mm KPV, 15 mm FN BRG-15 (http://modernfirearms.net/en/machineguns/belgium-machineguns/fn-brg-15-eng/), 23 mm Gsh-23 cannons such as on Viy (http://uaposition.com/file/2016/09/combat-module-Viy.jpg) and the 30 mm ASP-30 (http://www.army-guide.com/eng/product3643.html) offer more range and terminal effects than 12.7mm/0.5 in. Even in 0.5 in CIS .50 is better because of its dual feed.

If one was to consider the greatest then DShK will have to be ruled out because it has long been replaced by NSVT and Kord in Russia and Type 77 and 85 (also 89?) in China because of its weight (34 kg for the gun body vs 25 for Kord, 24 for Type 85 and 17 for Type 89). Kord also has the advantage that it can be fired from a bipod.

It will be interesting to know how HMGs are employed alongside QLZ-87 AGLs in the PLA.

Nah the KPV is the greatest of all heavy machine guns.

For the same reason the soviet kept using their AT guns during WWII, the 14.5mm is actually far meaner than most 20mm.

"Small" tungsten-core bullet (compared to a 20mm) + a lot of speed.

There is also the 20 mm recoilless Croatian RT-20:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RT-20_(rifle)

https://hooktube.com/watch?v=sMn_SCswXjc

The Finnish have the RK-20 APH in Soviet 20 mm Shvak no less:

https://www.militaryfactory.com/smallarms/detail.asp?smallarms_id=272

http://fcdn.valka.cz/attachments/4461/rk20.jpg

Another South African 20 mm anti-materiel rifle:

http://www.guns.com/2017/06/22/south-africas-truvelo-markets-20mm-hispano-anti-materiel-rifle-photo/

Also the Indians have the Vidhwansak and the Iranians have at some time presented 20 mm rifles.

The largest round used is 24 mm by the Swiss Th 41, which can be seen in glorious bicycle towed form in this article with excellent information on anti-tank and anti-materiel rifles:

https://www.bevfitchett.us/heavy-machine-guns/antitank-and-modern-heavy-rifles.html

Then there is the 25 mm XM109:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barrett_XM109

which is more of a grenade launcher like the so called "sniper" grenade launcher the 35/40 mm Chinese QLU-11:http://modernfirearms.net/en/grenade-launchers/china-grenade-launchers/norinco-lg5-qlu-11-eng/

>>541038

>only question is why?

According to Wikipedia the RT-20 was "developed to shoot the thermal sights on Serbian M-84 and T-72 tanks".

f2c85b No.541064

>>541034

Why would you when you have 14.5mm that is better and widespread?

>>541035

That rifle being available in multi-caliber and the 14.5mm version clearly beats both 20mm (the in-house 20mm short/low recoil version and the classic 20x110, it's heavier so it hit harder but it also go down way faster).

20mm is interesting if you want a HEI projectile.

>>541168

What exactly do you think 14.5 is?

It's essentially a 20mm powder charge with a core made out a 12.7 tungsten bullet under the 14.5 jacket and it's incendiary compound.

Most underrated cartridge ever.
