What is the most american type of gun?

semi-automatic/automatic anything was invented by Hiram Maxim, but he was an emigrant to UK.

revolvers are pretty damn american but revolving actions have been made for kings and shit since the 1500s.

bolt action is german.

maybe lever action rifles?

1911 has ties to Belgium through Browning's work with FN.

Revolvers bring to mind America first, but not exclusively (e.g. the Webley).

AR variants and lever guns both seem like good candidates.

But perhaps the most American type of gun is the one in civilian hands.

I think you need two different categories, if not four.

>government

It should come in experimental and issued flavours. Even before and during ww1 the US Army fumbled quite a lot with its rifles, yet ended up adopting a completely different one in 1917 just to make things rolling. And remember that the M16 was supposed to be an interim solution until a Wunderwaffe is ready.

>civilian

I admit that I'm not in a good position to form an opinion here, but it looks like to me that if you disregard people who have guns but don't care too much about them, then you have fudds and gun nuts. Fudds was their durrguns like what their zogbot grandpa' used to save democracy. Meanwhile gun nuts either want all that tacticool bling, or they are fine with whatever takes their fancy, be it cheap foreign surplus rifles, or the most expensive collectors' items they can afford.

Also, it just hit me that one could earn quite a lot of money if he took a few girls like pic related and dressed them up in a similar fashion to that pin up girl, but with the uniforms of various axis forces. You could claim that you are just an artist and this is some very deep social critique. All the jewish newspapers would be quetching about this, meanwhile all the jews would be willing to pay top shekel for this kind of soft porn.

>Garand

It really shows the industrial capacities of the USA, but it seems to be a kind of an unicorn, because they had a clear idea what they want from the rifle, and it delivered all of that without being bogged down by useless "development", and it required nearly no "refinements" to work as intended. And it was indeed state-of-the-art technology that they didn't buy off-the-shelf and also didn't fuck up. Garand himself was a French-Canadian immigrant, but I'd say it adds to that typical successful immigrant image the USA likes to employ in its brain drain propaganda. With all that said, I'd argue for the M14:

>had an old-fashioned stock after ww2 showed how a separate pistol grip is a must

>promised to be a superweapon, replacing everything from smgs to sniper rifles, and failed to do so

>had a completely new cartridge developed for it, that was just a bit shorter version of the previous one

>actually, the weapon and the cartridge were the end results of a drawn-out experimental program that was rigged in its favour, because a few people were greedy, and an other few were the worst kind of patriotards

>it was marketed as a cheap option, because it was supposed to use most of the Garand's tooling

>the fucking Italians did a better mag-fed select-fire Garand firing 7.62x51mm, and they developed it faster

It's the perfect blend of the worst aspect of the fudd and the tactcool mindsets, and it's the result of a bad and wasteful government program.

>Hey, free publicity. Getting a jew to give something away for free is quite the accomplishment.

Indeed, that's why it would be so successful. You'd have fucking CNN showing pictures from a legit axis glamour shot, going on about how the second shoah is upon us. And it's gnadzeesm, so even Fox News and co would get into it. It's only natural that the rest of the world's media would follow suit and pick up the story. Even Russian state television would show everyone how fascism is on the rise again. And you'd just need a pretty girl and maybe the willingness to ruin a perfectly fine replica of a ww2 uniform.

It's either a Winchester lever action or the Colt 1873. I'd lean toward the 1873 because unlike the Winchester or most everything else as far as I know it was never popularized outside the US during it's heyday. Even the Winchester was used in significant numbers by the Plains Indians, the Ottomans, French, Russians and others, but no one took to the 1873.

I'd second this, given that it also represents the American method of engineering.

We like simple solutions, that are maybe a bit outside the box.

Where the Russians'll usually just make it bigger, the Germans'll engineer a perfect machine that will take a small army to disassemble, the British will give you the old method and tell you to toughen up, the Americans say "Well, what if we just skip it entirely?".

Other people look at the problem of, in this case, overheating barrels, and say "Let's figure a way to cool, and quickly replace our barrel".

America looked at it and said "what if we just used more?".

You're kidding right?

They've tried to get the M1 to work since the day WWI ended (mostly because France had semi-autos in service in 1918 and none in 1939, yes). It's a miracle they got it working "in time" for WWII.

And when Melvin Johnson showed up in 1940 (were the Garand still weren't working) with a design radically superior (more ammo, far less recoil, used the same clips as the others rifles, could be reloaded at any time, etc…) and came with a common based LMG a light year ahead the BAR 1918 to go with it, they literally told him to his face that the Garand was to big to fail and that the government had spent the last 22 years funding it so they had to go with it.

You know, if Americans could hit the target they were aiming at (with more than one shot out of ten thousand) you wouldn't have needed to worry about barrel heat.
