There's a flawed idea in the west that in order to suppress, we have to use smaller cartridges so we can carry a lot of them, thus giving more suppression time on target. This results in guns with pisspoor range that can't suppress because the enemy isn't afraid of them. In reality if we want to extend the belt time, we can just step back the rate of fire.

For example the Negev fires 1000rpm (average) which wastes its 100 round belt in 6 seconds. So it has to carry ten 100rd belts of 5.56 to get a full minute of fire.

While a 7.62 gun, firing at 300rpm, wastes the full 100 round belt in 33 seconds. So it only has to carry three 100rd belts to get a full minute fire. Even if 7.62 weighs twice as much as 5.56, it's still lighter logistically than a Negev…. and more useful since the range/penetration blows it out of the water.

I think the psychological effect worked only once on inexperienced troops, same with the siren on the stuka. People got terrified and frozen the first few times, but if they survived the signature sound just basically told them the direction and type of attacker so they were ten times better at fighting it.
