I'm just going to leave this here

dccd10 No.536155

>be colt

>become bloated from holding monopoly on U.S small arms

>army wants new rifles, ACR program

>actual competition this time, have to think fast

>army wants better hit probability? let's stack a bullet onto another bullet in the same case, ingenious, abandoned after trials

>add stupid rail thing on handguard for modularity, abandons it after trials

>through sheer jewery and slum-lord like behavior, fudge the test results and come out on top

>army stuck with Colt's bullshit for another 40 years

>Shekels keep pouring in

So firing bursts of lightweight projectiles isn't a solution to the problem of soldiers being unable to hit the broad side of a barn. Might as well go the other direction and try aimed semiautomatic fire with heavy bullets that can penetrate most cover. Or even better, use light machine guns to pin down the enemy, and use rifles both to cover the LMG and to throw rifle grenades at the pinned enemy.

pic related, guess which rifle the Army kept

hint: it's the overpriced on that didn't keep any of its test adaptations

Isn't this what is used these days by nearly everyone. Also why not just use auto grenade launchers in place of at least one machine gun while we are at it?

No, because the hip and coll thing is using 5.56x45 and 40mm underbarrel grenade launchers. The 5.56-firing M16 was originally adopted as an interim solution until the SPIW program was ended, and the idea was overcoming an enemy with the volume of fire that comes from hauling more bullets into battle. But that is a questionable idea.

The 40x46mm was designed for a stand-alone grenade launcher, and the underbarrel stuff is less accurate. Also, rifle grenades are inherently more variable than the grenades of those launchers, so you can go bigger or smaller depending on your needs.

>why not just use auto grenade launchers in place of at least one machine gun while we are at it?

At what level? I'd say two of them in every platoon is reasonable, but that depends on what kind of a platoon we are speaking about.
