Mugabe won because he had communist guerillas, tribal savages, foreign aid, and the Rhodesians black "allies" on his side. Tribal leaders stopped supporting him almost immediately when he had them genocided. Foreign aid in terms of money and food continued until early 2000s but cut out when it became public knowledge that Mugabe was insane. Now the blacks who betrayed Rhodesians are turning against Mugabe as well, these make up the majority of the army and competent workforce because they were trained by Rhodesians.

I don't think they'll call back the whites though, kind of hard to admit you betrayed someone good.

From their perspective, it's probably not worth killing Mugabe and his family. He's a decrepit old lich and this coup will strip the legitimacy of his wife, murder or no. Saying "they're safe, don't worry" and restructuring the government around them will cause less scandal than executing them and achieve roughly the same ends. Sort of reminds me of Cao Cao taking de facto control of China and declaring himself a humble servant of the emperor. Whatever legitimacy you can gain during or immediately after a coup pays tenfold down the line.
