Since 1990 firearms regulation in Ireland has been absolutely out of control.
You have to have a firearms license to own pepper spray. Guess what? You're not legally allowed to use pepper spray outside your house. Not even if you're being mugged. It's a criminal offense to carry it, open or concealed.
In the last 27 years we've had over 20 additions or changes to firearms law, most of them further restricting their legality in a country where they're already highly difficult to obtain.

Self defense here applies strictly to acts you perform AFTER you have identified the specific threat. Anything you do to prevent an attack without being able to point to a specific person and say why you think he in particular is going to attack you is not self defense. Carrying any sort of defensive weapon is obviously an action taken before the attacker arrives, and thus is not self defense.
The claimed logic is that self defense is inherently a response, since it is only made possible by the actions of another, and the response cannot exist before the thing it responds to; it is also justified with the claim that since self defense should be suited to the threat, you can't prepare before you know what the threat is.

This means a special modification to the gun is required that makes it impossible to fire metal rounds, usually a huge dent is made into the barrel, or buck teeth are welded in on the inside. One revolver make uses offcenter barrel, without internal obstructions. All sale legal handgun rounds are rubber and with absolute fuckall powder load. It hardly improves the situation because in the event of self-defense you will get shafted either way. At that point it makes more sense to own an illegal gun, that way at least you can kill the assailant so you won't be going to jail for nothing, and you can rest well knowing you had rid the world of a pest. Also that way there's a better chance they will not find you, though with a murder accusation they will be looking harder than for armed assault with little to no bodily harm.

Can go out and buy a SL8 right now or a type 81 (7.62x39 AK clone) but cannot buy an AR-15 because it's restricted. In Canada there are two main types of licences: the PAL (Possession and Aquisition licence) and RPAL (Restricited Possession and Aquisition Licence) are both easy to get. For both you need to take a day long course where you watch videos and take a test anyone with the most base knowledge of guns could pass, and then you get the forums to fill out and send to the government, which usually takes them 2 months to go over and send the licence back. Now the difference between a PAL and a RPAL and is basically gun length (and looks in some cases) but I won't go over all the classes. RPAL is basically handguns and short rifles and AR-15s. Now with my PAL I can walk into any gun store and buy a gun easily, all I have to do is show them my licence and pay and walk out, most stores keep serial numbers for bookkeeping but there is no government registration. With non-restricted guns you can just throw them into your car and take them where ever you want (when you are out of the car they must be out of view and locked up) Nd can shoot them on private property or anywhere on crown land. For a restricted gun you go into the store show them your RPAL pay and leave empty handed because for EVERY purchase of a restricted gun they need to run a background check. So in a bout a week you can go get your pistol or AR and bring it home but Restricited guns need to be registered with the government and EVERY time you want to take the gun out of your home you must file a report of where you are taking your restricted gun and your entire route to that location with as few stops along the way as possible. If that is approved you may now take your gun to a certified shooting range and cannot use it on private property. There is no way anyone will get a licence to carry for any class of gun, so I won't even cover that, though you can apparently get a "surveyors permit" to carry handguns in the wild. My neighbour works in the oil fields as a pilot in norther Alberta and the territories and he says he brings his .22lr pistol up with him every time he goes. There is also a classification called prohibited but as the name suggests they are impossible to get without extreme circumstances. As it is now the RCMP is able to move any gun to the prohibited class whenever they want for no reason. Last year they banned the Canadian legal Sig 556s last year because they look scary and who needs a gun like that? In Canada you cannot own a fully auto or a gun that was fully auto but was converted to semi auto. And as I said before the AR-15 is restricted (because le army gun) yet a Mini 14, SKS, Type 81 ect are all non restricted. All are semiauto "military guns" yet only the one the public knows about is the restricted one.
I know Canada has it pretty good compared to most euros tfw no suppressors but still we have really dumb laws and our national gun "council" thing is headed by feminists, doctors, police, and politicians, all generally anti-gun people.

Bolt actions are fine. Those, because of the ammo they take, are classified as "conditional use" guns. It's fine if it isn't magazine-fed. Lots of Mausers 1909 and 1891 in the hands of civilians here, I have seen some Nuggets, one sporterized, and the other, in it's original form. Ammo is really expensive and limited to common calibers, so no one wants to go through the bureaucratic hassle of telling the Government about your new fun to just never use it because ammo is too expensive.
