Warfighters who have run around doing stupid tasks for stupid officers, but who have never seen the enemy, have a different problem. The modern world is misguided, largely due to (((Hollywood's))) habit of glorifying unrealistic violence. The average person sees Jason Bourne or James Bond or John Wick in a dramatic gunfight. The average normie wants to believe that soldiers have a glorious John Wick shootout every time somebody dies in war. Speaking as a fat-bellied, neck-bearded normie myself: All our lives, we put up with a steady stream of propaganda about how soldiers are super-cool, how soldiers are action heroes, how soldiers are tougher than normies could ever be. Even if I beat up three guys single-handedly with my fists, I get told that soldiers are tougher than I will ever be. However, the only thing a soldier has that I don't is the opportunity to kill an enemy legally. There are vast numbers of normies who are not killers, who will never be killers, but we are told that we are scum because we are not soldiers. So we want to know: have you ever really killed a guy? Is it anything special? Does it justify the endless hype about how soldiers are supermen? Yeah, I know, I'm a repulsive, disgusting human being for wanting to know.

However when a total stranger or someone you barely talk to starts asking you that it's bizarre and awkward.

It's the context of the situation I'm talking about, you wouldn't go to a job interview and ask the guy if he's ever killed anyone after finding out he's a veteran because it would just make everything uncomfortable and probably make him not want to hire you, while you could probably go up to a good friend and they won't have a huge problem with it (unless they went through some particularly crazy shit).

In my area many people join the military because the recruiters tell some tall tails about the kinds of benefits it offers. The opinion I have towards soldiers is generally that they are incredibly unfortunate to risk their life/mind to a confusing war in exchange for so little compensation. At the last social gathering I attended another attendee had to rush off in the middle of the night to help his vet buddy who was getting suicidal after returning from a tour in the Middle East.
