entire generations were told it's normal to have PTSD, and eventually the diagnosis was so wide (like the feminist definition of "rape") that now what used to be a rite of passage for men is now considered to be a bad thing.

PTSD is real, but a lot of cases are overblown. people deal with stress in different ways. we had a fucking twat on twitter claiming she got PTSD because someone insulted her over the internet. it's lost all meaning.

There's really multiple types of PTSD

One kind is where physical damage occurs in the brain when someone is subjected to a severe explosive blast, or multiple lesser blasts.

Basically, the shockwave will travel through the body and fuck up the brain, resulting in tiny growths that fuck up all sorts of shit.

This would be in line with the classic "shell shock", but can cause more subtle effects as well.

There's not really any way to treat this yet.

The other type is the result of severe or prolonged psychological stress. The reason you didn't hear about it much is because no one ever talked about it, but it was absolutely there. Had a great uncle in WW2, and he deliberately drank himself to death because of it. The only reason my grandpa learned what happened was because his brother would only talk when extremely drunk. Basically he and his group were captured by germans sent to an eastern camp where they were tortured and executed one by one until it was just him and one other guy left. Then the russian's liberated the camp, so he joined up with them. He then got a front row seat to slavic ethics in action as they raped and mutliated their way through civilians to the west, and spent the last part of the war completely out of his fucking mind and drugged up on anything he could find. My great uncle hated germans but he REALLY hated russians/communists. My grandpa suspects that his brother may have been responsible for some killings of communists in the area where he lived.

That's the difficult thing about all of this, is that overall they weren't that bad as they were made to seem, at least at first and compared to anything anyone else did. Nobody said anything about communists or NKVD. Even if they had been conscripted by the Soviets, that doesn't make them communists by any means. That's why they had to have the commissars there in the first place executing everyone and their mother who might have deserted, or had a comrade who deserted, or had a comrade who died but was thought to have deserted.

You do hear about from WWI and WWII, just with different names at different times.

I suspect part of the reason is an increase in connectivity and urbanization. In the past when much more of the population was rural and relatively isolated, having one or two guys come back from war with PTSD could easily be dismissed as them being cowards or needing to man up. But when you have denser populations with fast communication, and even things like photography, you're both faced with a much larger number and are more likely to encounter the really severe cases, so it becomes much harder to deny it's a real problem.

Also bear in mind that in sane cultures, men are allowed to be violent to blow off steam. E.g. after the Civil War, someone was impolite to Ambrose Bierce. Bierce drew a pistol and prepared to kill the guy dead. No charges were filed, because the community expected veterans to deal with stress reasonably - e.g. by shooting people dead.

Many of these actions, same as in other countries, were retribution actions for partisan attacks, which btw are not covered by international laws. A great many of such actions taken against civilians, which often are portrayed as war crimes, were caused by assassination attempts done by locals on officers, which were illegal.
