Hie, let's talk about eye dominance.

I'm right handed, but my dominant eye is my left one.

Should I use my guns only with my left hand then?

I truly don't know what to do. I find a lot of different answer, like keeping my dominant hand, or changing to my dominant eye, left hand for gun and right hand for rifle etc…

I obviously want a "tactical" answer (not static shooting range answer) I want to keep both of my eyes open (if possible).

Thanks!

I can only offer you this.

Use right hand shooting, practise making your right eye the dominant one. You can do this with rifle shooting by half closing your left eye as you mount your rifle. Alternatively, you can learn to shoot with both eyes open- scout rifles and ghost ring sighted rifles are excellent for this.

Source- Ripped clean from Art of the Rifle by Jeff Cooper, devotes much writing to field shooting

The easiest method is to wear shooting glasses and cover the left side with tape. You can train yourself to become more reliant on your right eye if you practice enough.

f49dce No.521324

doesn't deserve a thread imo, but I have the same issue as you only I'm not able to shoot lefthanded. I always had a flinch or was working to stop it. My eyesight changed a while back and with my old glasses my right eye became much better than my left. I hadn't shot rifles at a range in a ~year but when I did, I could shoot better than I had since I was shooting hundreds of rounds per day, every day and focusing solely on it. And I could shoot this well every time with little effort. So eyes are very important.

I wrote much more than this before I realized you separated 'gun' and 'rifle'.

tl;dr, switch to dominant eye only if you don't have a lot of prior training and muscle memory to waste or have lots of money for ammo and training.

For handguns, do whatever you want.

For long guns, you can hold it either way, but you'll have to close your left eye in order to be accurate when holding it right handed. You should practice holding both ways, but you should hold it lefty primarily because you don't want to have to close an eye or wear an eyepatch. If you're using AR-15 platform, you should get an ambidextrous safety selector (and maybe mag release and charging handle) so you can access all controls comfortably and efficiently from either side.

Isn't eye dominance genetic? It's handedness that can change, I don't think you can change your eye dominance.

Otherwise, you won't be able to reload as quickly as if you were right-eyed. Funny thing is, I think lefty AR-15 with fully ambi controls is the fastest of all because the bolt release is within your finger's reach and everything else is the same.

my eye dominance changed but went immediately back when I got new glasses. when I was using things to block by left eye I would get better at switching which eye I was using in the moment, but it was always a struggle

my eyesight is so poor i can only use point fire or a magnified scope/optic.

i am actually really proud of my non sighted accuracy.

>Use right hand shooting, practice making your right eye the dominant one. You can do this with rifle shooting by half closing your left eye as you mount your rifle.

So it's possible to change your dominant eye?

I thook it was genetic, and highly unchangeable.

>>521324

So you're all telling me that I should be full left handed?

I'm just starting shooting. Should I go left hand right now, or wait more time and force myself to use my right eye?

When shooting with pistols, I have to change my focus for like 1/2 second, before being able to use it. Everything appear more blur than with my left eye, but it's "doable". I only tested close range though.

>>521324

Why can't you shoot with your left hand?

I mean, it's just a matter of training to hold the gun…

What a pain in the ass. Between the one saying that it's ok to stay with right hand, others saying that I should go full left hand.

Should I "force" myself to use the right eye? Should I go full left hand?

Thanks.

>Should I "force" myself to use the right eye? Should I go full left hand?

My understanding is that eye dominance is generally unchangeable. >>521328 was able to change it, but then it changed back. In order to shoot a long gun accurately right handed, you'll need to close or cover your right eye. You don't want to have to close an eye because it adversely affects your situational awareness and it's a pain in the ass to have to scrunch your face. Thus, I would suggest that you go full left handed with long guns. Changing sides is more doable than changing eyes (which is what militaries often require for the sake of uniformity at the expense of the left-eyed), the main drawback is that you may want to invest in ambi components in certain guns to eliminate the disadvantage of everything being on the opposite side.

With handguns, it doesn't matter. You can hold them in your right hand.

If you want to change that prepare to become a pirate, not even joking you're gonna have to wear an eye patch for a while.

Well there's a shooting style called "Center Axis Relock" where they always shoot with both eyes open, sighting with the eye opposite the shooting hand. That allows you to shoot with either hand while keeping both eyes open, but you hold the gun in a way that almost looks like the gangster cant. My retarded non-expert opinion can't really find much wrong with it. I don't want to be singing the praises of the latest tactical shooting meme, but it sounds like exactly what you're looking for. Maybe look into that?

I don't have a good answer for you. My lefthand is undextrous as fuck and I would never want to be stuck using a pistol with it. When I said I can't shoot left handed, I meant purely from an injury and rifle-related. It wasn't relevant. Learning to use your opposite hand on a long gun is probably easier than with a pistol.

>>521347

>scrunch your face

the scrunching or partial closing of an eye makes me and most people I've known develop flinches. but I've seen a few people who had no issue with it

Hard to be sure your pic is a cripple stock, but it could be. The have a lateral curve so that you can shoulder them opposite side you sight. Originally made for wealthy hunters that lost their dominant arm/hand to big game. I think Ian has video featuring one.

All right, I understand.

By "tactical", I mean that I asked advices about auto-defense that imply speed and reflex, not standing for 10 minutes not moving in front of a stand.

I guess I'll have to go full left hand for rifle. I'll try so workout for pistols.

Thanks guys.

Eat shit and die you fucking kike. This cancer is exactly why this board is dead. Look at the rest of the thread, great discussion. But no, you want attention drawn to some shit IRC-style cuckchan general thread so the entire board is that general, maybe a spoo/k/y thread, and everything else being either a big news story every once in a great while or roleplaying thread.

I'm left-eyed and right-handed. I can only shoot bows accurately left-handed. I can shoot guns with either hand but I'm more accurate left-handed, even with pistols. I like that I can reasonably use a pistol in my left hand, and a knife in my right.
