Flywheel gear shifting. Easy to do on light trucks and handy if your clutch is fucked. Bear in mind, to start a vehicle with a fucked clutch, you need to be rolling at about a casual jog to be able to put it in first. I can shift by sound alone because of how used to my vehicle i am, but there should be a tutorial somewhere on how to do it by tachometer.

- being able to drive well in reverse
- low-speed maneuvering/precision work (parking, knowing where your car will fit and where it won't, etc.)
- hypermiling concepts (the core of which are conservative acceleration and braking, keeping a long follow distance, predicting others' actions and being predictable to others)
- experience with a wide range of vehicles (knowing where certain controls are without having to fiddle while driving, knowing the differences in capabilities between different engines/transmissions, knowing the differences between FWD, RWD, AWD in regards to cornering and general handling, knowing how to drive an 18-wheeler if you have to, etc.)
- defensive driving skills, particularly avoidance maneuvers at highway speed and in sub-optimal weather
- the ability to perform regular maintenance yourself; knowing how to prepare for and troubleshoot acute failures of various components (blown tire, various fluid leaks, dead battery, etc.)

That depends. You want casual driving skills or extreme driving skills? Casual driving requires hardly any skill at all so I'm not touching it.
Extreme driving skills:
>judging corners
>picking edge-apex-edge line
>trail braking
>correcting lost traction
>correcting snap oversteer
>using proper RPM range
>drafting
>not locking up your brakes
>making pit maneuver
Seriously rev your fucking motor to the red zone and correct properly, that got to be the two most important things about extreme driving. First allows you to accelerate much faster and second allows you not to drive like a pussy. Knowing how to execute pit maneuver is going to be extremely handy if you need to make a getaway but cannot drive fast enough. Dirt driving is usually inconsequential because without knowing the dirt road already you're guaranteed to crash within a couple of minutes, and dirt roads are nowhere near wide enough to allow for proper dirt driving techniques.

Following speed limits, traffic laws, and making complete stops at red lights and stop signs.
Level 2 is stopping for pedestrians on crosswalks and slowing down at yellow lights.
If you can do those, your chance of being kill on the road is reduced far more than if you drive a fucking road-ninja profligate.
>>517102
This is also useful, automatics are for women and fatties.
ed76c1 No.517639
>>517635
Yellow lights don't mean "slow down." They mean "do not enter the intersection unless it's unsafe to stop."
Also, I hope by "stop for pedestrians" you mean "yield to pedestrians who are already crossing" and not "stop if there's a pedestrian waiting to cross."
ALSO, the chances of being involved in an accident go down as your speed approaches the average speed of traffic, regardless of the speed limit. If the speed limit is 55 but everyone's doing an average of 65, you're safer doing 65 than 55.
Personally, I would add to "following traffic laws":
- Do what you're supposed to do. Don't "be nice."
- Go when it's you're turn; don't let someone else go before you.
- Don't slow down to let someone else merge; it's THEIR responsibility to merge.
- Don't drive in the left lane unless you're passing.
- If you are passing, make sure you're going fast enough to get it done relatively quickly; don't pass a 60 mph driver at 60.2 mph.
- Don't stop or even slow down at "yield" signs unless there's actually someone you need to yield to.
ed76c1 No.517643
>>517639
- When making a left turn across traffic, don't ease out; just wait for your turn to go and GO.
- When making a left turn across traffic onto a road where there's a left-turn-only lane, DO NOT turn into the left-turn-only lane.
- When utilizing a left-turn-only lane to make a left turn, don't slow way down before you get into the left-turn-only lane; the lanes are there so people turning left don't disrupt the traffic behind them.
- Follow signs and markings in parking lots. A high percentage of low-speed collisions in happen in parking lots because people pretend that there are no rules there. Don't cut across lanes of parking spots. Don't pull through parking spots. If there are arrows indicating which direction to go, follow them.
- When in doubt, signal. Signal when you're turning, when you're changing lanes, when you're parking, when you're pulling out of a parking space… you can't really OVER-signal. Also, signal BEFORE you begin executing the maneuver you're signaling for: for example, if you're making a turn, signal before you start slowing down; otherwise you're just some idiot slowing down for no reason.
ed76c1 No.517644
>>517643
- If you drive a stick shift, DO NOT allow your car to roll back. Not even an inch. Use the parking brake or heel-toe technique if you have to.
- In fact, never back up in the middle of the road. I was once backed into by an 18-wheeler who was trying to "make room" for someone to pass him in a traffic jam. You should never back up unless you're backing IN or backing OUT of a space, and it should be done extremely carefully.

This is simply not true.
- cheaper to fix
- more durable
- lighter weight
- gives a skilled driver more control over their vehicle (acceleration, braking, cornering dynamics, inclement weather)
- more fun in many situations
Plus, I think learning to drive a stick forces you to pay more attention to your driving.
cfd79c No.517655
>>517649
>- more durable
Depends entirely on the vehicle
For example a T5 manual transmission in a V8 powered vehicle is going to be less reliable than a 4L80E/TH400 and the TH400 can handle far more HP/Torque, because the torque converter before lockup is not a direct mechanical connection like a manual a lot of automatic transmissions can actually handle higher power since there is less of an initial driveline shock, especially with drag racing where automatics are used in all of the highest end cars due to faster shifting and repeatability
Manuals are generally simpler to repair but there are some extremely reliable automatics as well

What proof do you want? I suppose I could take a pic of the marks but it was over 15 years ago.
If you find yourself in a spin that you want to keep going (eg. past 90 deg so 360 is your best bet) pin the brake to the floor and lock all 4 wheels, once you come around use a little counter steer and release the brake so the wheels can grip again.
Honestly not sure if this would work with ABS as I have never tried in a car with it.
ed76c1 No.517658
>>517655
Okay, perhaps "more durable" was a bit of a stretch in the realm of performance cars, but let's not forget that V8s are getting rarer and rarer, and I don't think there are even any V8 manuals on the market right now. Also, the T5 is… to say the least… not exactly a modern example.
So maybe not more "durable," per se, but there's a hell of a lot less that can go wrong. Let's say "more reliable."

Works fine with ABS as long as you know what you're doing. You can't use locking the wheels as a crutch for breaking traction, so you have to be moving quickly enough and cut the wheel aggressively enough. In fact, hitting the brakes at all before your ass end has some momentum is a sure way to end up against the guard rail since ABS will have you slowing down while maintaining traction.
Of course, when I go playing in my car, I just turn the ABS off so I don't have to deal with it. :)

Meant to add, also while the T5 isn't modern it still is one of the most common transmissions and was used on a large amount of 80s-90s sports cars where it can be an issue when increasing power, its successor the T56 was used until isn't much stronger and is also somewhat problematic due to being a barely modified T5 design (named T56 for basically being a T5 with a 6th gear added) was used until relatively recently
Same with the 6L80E and TH400 being one of the most common automatic transmissions in some cars and a lot of trucks/vans and known for being extremely strong and reliable
> but there's a hell of a lot less that can go wrong. Let's say "more reliable."
Less moving parts for sure but being more reliable is a debatable point
Depends more on the driver than any other factor, a shitty driver with a manual will destroy one much quicker, unlike manuals with a clutch an automatic has no parts that can wear down quickly and are sacrificial materials that induce friction, automatics do have clutch packs but they wear out due to excessive mileage and not driving habits and will still engage when totally worn out
ed76c1 No.517667
>>517666
I'm well aware of how transmissions work, and I'm willing to concede that the clutch is a glaring weak point in a manual transmission (like you said, with a shitty driver.) I still pretty firmly believe that with an average car and average driver, you're more likely to have a problem with an auto within the first 100k miles than with a manual.
I've had clutches outlast synchronizers, well past 200k miles. I did burn one up pretty bad when I was 16 (trying to race… dropped the clutch at 5k rpms… in THIRD gear instead of first, lol) but still drove it home. Conversely, I've had automatics that got slushy to the point of being undriveable after 150k, or a solenoid failure after 50k, and I know plenty of people who have had one tiny part go tits-up and ruin the whole box.
I'm really trying not to be a stick shift fanboy here, and maybe my experience is the exception and not the rule.

Oi cunts, horses for courses.
Auto is better for:
Rock climbing because you don't have to ride the clutch.
Heavy traffic because you are stuck shifting all the time.
Large trucks because of narrow power band.
Military vehicles when you have a lot of shit to think about and need reduced work load.
Manual is better for:
General offroad for engine braking.
Rally and drifting for engine braking, compression lockup and avoiding upshift during wheelspin.
Light / no traffic for engine braking.
Personally I prefer manual for every daily drive situation other than heavy traffic.

I do auto work
-Cheaper to fix is generally true - a manual trans does not have bands, clutches, or servos that go bad.
-Durable can be true, as the power flow through the trans from engine->wheels has fewer, shorter components
-Lighter weight also true, as there are less parts
-To say a manual trans gives you less control is pants on head retarded - you literally get two more controls
-More fun is an opinion you are right (although I agree with him as do a lot of stick drivers)

It's to avoid hitting someone behind you, and to avoid making the person behind you nervous that you're going to hit them. You shouldn't be moving backward at all on a road where you're expected to be going forward.
Good driving etiquette means that people should not be pulling up directly to your bumper, but people do it anyway. It's your responsibility to not roll backwards into them.

Here is an actually useful tip;
When you are in a survival situation, knowing how fast you are is irrelevant, especially offroad, and even more so at night. You don't care if you are going 80 or 85 mph or km/h at that point. But keeping the speedometer lighting on will still rob you of your natural night vision, since it will constantly shine up into your eyes.
In most military or offroad vehicles there is a switch to turn it off, but if you have a civilian car, you may need to rig a switch for it, which actually isn't difficult at all.
Pop open the panel and find the cables going to and from the speedometer lighting, then just cut one of the wires, install a simple switch (which can be bought in any hardware store) and mount it somewhere you can access it easily. Don't forget to fasten it properly, and close the insulation again. Even idiots can do it.
The advantages are obvious. You can completely shut off your speedometer lights, and keep your natural night vision working, as well as making it harder to spot your vehicle at night.
While you are at it, you can possibly replace one of the LEDs with an IR one, and connect a separate switch to it. This would allow you to shut off the normal lights, but keep the IR one on, for obvious reasons.
