Any of you have experience with archery , I'm a europoor student so even a handgun is out of the question but I was thinking of taking archery as a hobby. I can afford it and it's probably gonna be a better use of my free time. My question is if it's worth it , how effective is a bow for hunting or sharpshooting , I'm only 5.6 so I guess I'm limited by that too.

bcf4cd No.516357

Bows can kill things just fine. What makes you a good or bad bow hunter is stalking, find prey and getting close enough to get off a good shot.

A ranged hobby of some sort is always worth it.

Big thing for a new hobby is not to blow a bunch of money on something you may not like. Get the minimum adequate gear you need, and you'll learn whether spending more money is a good idea.

000000 No.516362

Why not start with airguns instead? The pellets are dirt cheap at 1-2 cents each, and the clubs always have guns to lend out to new members and beginners. It will give you good practice and shooting fundamentals, if you ever want to transition to real guns.

As far as I know most airsoft clubs deal with balls not with pellets , round projectiles have ballistics nothing like real guns. Not a bad idea though, I will look into it.

No, I'm talking about airguns that fire a cylindrical lead pellet through a rifled bore. It's an Olympic sport in fact.

As a strelok who is 5'6" I can name archery as the reason I was able to build muscle to partially overcome my asthma.

I recommend compound bows, as they're better able to convert your muscle into kinetic energy, an also *much* easier to take your time in aiming. In exchange they're an absolute *PAIN* to snap-shoot.

If you're going to go grouse hunting, use a traditional bow with bird fletching. If you're wanting to put holes in paper at thirty yards, use a compound bow.

If you someday want to kill something (/someone) don't just slap a broadhead on and expect it too fly straight. Those blades are wings and you'll need to know if your setup is adequately tuned for those particular steel wings of death.

Dont shoot yourself in the foot when you're tuning your setup for broadhead use. It will be embarrassing as heck to explain to the emergency staff why you're missing a toe.

What would be a good place to start for a complete noob? I'd love to use the old pattern oak longbow, but I know I don't have the strength to do that now and quite probably never will.

Only fags use compound bows. Get a recurve, or better yet an English long bow and be a real man. Moderate poundage to start with so you dont get discouraged, also cheap arrows as you'll be breaking/losing a lot.

This is the skeleton of an English Longbowman, recovered from the wreck of the Mary Rose. Note the over-development of the bones in the left arm, wrist, and hand. Shooting a properly built 6ft Oak war-bow requires a level of muscle I probably couldn't develop if I replaced my blood with pure steroids.

There's a reason that every Englishman over the age of 12 was required by law to turn out for regular archery practice in the 13th century. There's a reason that phrase 'to train a longbowman, start with his grandfather' became something of a meme at the time. If it were as simple as just working out a bit more you'd probably still see units of longbow specialists in the British army - there were officers trying to reintroduce the weapon as late as the 1790's.

As far as I'm aware the last confirmed wartime kill with a bow was Mad Jack in WW2 - there's been some rumours of various nations special forces testing out crossbows for various reasons, but if those rumours are true they've yet to log a confirmed, non-classified, kill.

Mediterranean grip or Mongolian grip?

2aec4f No.517688

What you're thinking of is a warbow, these were often 120lbs or more in draw weight. But if you're not trying to kill French knights there is no reason why you need such heavy bows, you can get a victorian style longbow is any draw weight you want.

If you try to kill a French knight he'll summon Charlemagne with his horn, who will then proceed to destroy your city and convert your wife to Catholicism. At least I think that's how the story went. It's been over a decade since I last read the Song of Roland.

Fair point, but as the main concern with Saracens is their horse archers you'd still want the extra lethal range (which would be further extended by their lack of heavy armour) that a longbow would provide in order to counter their mobility advantage.

>>522534

They must have lost the horn some time after 814 then. Also, would he not respond to his Lombard subjects as well? Or is it just the Franks I'd be very careful suggesting a 1:1 crossover with Franks and the French, particularly modern France. While we're on the subject, you're not forgiving the son of Pepin the Short for his crimes against the Saxons, or trying to usurp the Byzantines by declaring his empire to be the new Rome, are you?

798976 No.522824

>>522809

Longbows don't have that far a range, when you get to a certain point, increasing the draw weight doesn't increase the speed than an arrows is launched, it actually decreases the speed as the bow is slowed down by the weight of the limbs. However, really high draw pound bows will launch heavy arrows as fast as a lighter bow will launch lighter arrows, and so longbow arrows tend to be quite massive, 1000-1500 grains. Their range is only about 200 yards, but their mass ensures they pack a heap of energy even at their maximum range as they retain momentum much better, and arrows actually pick up speed as they fall towards the earth.

In contrast, Saracen recurved bows could launch a light arrows much faster and further than a longbow could, however due to their lack of weight they had no killing potential against an armoured opponent. Saracen archery doctrine was more about harassment, whilst longbows weren't much of a skirmishing weapon and instead were used to lay down a heavy storm of arrows on to incoming heavy infantry/cavalry formations.

It always fascinated me how English longbowmen could cut through french knights like they were nothing. All the velocity and punch of a spear condensed into into an arrow!

9966cf No.523084

>>522841

As much as it pains me to admit this a lot of the English victories during the Hundred Years War were more to do with the French Knights being absolute fucking retards. The longbow was certainly a superior weapon for the day - although you did have to pretty much devote your nation to training with it if you wanted to field any number of longbowmen in battle. Agincourt provides a couple of perfect examples of the effects of inbreeding on French knights though.

>Send an encircling force to catch the sick, hungry, tired, and outnumbered English between the hammer and the anvil.

<Encircling force decides that the battle sounds really unpleasant and they'd much rather just start looting the undefended English camp.

>Hey, we hired all these heavily armed, armoured, and skilled mercenaries who know exactly how to approach and attack a heavily defended position. Shall we use these guys for the job we actually paid them for?

<Fuck them, we're knights! Let's send the mercs in and then just charge through their units from behind, riding large numbers of them down and breaking up our own formation in the process! I see no problem with this plan!

>The English force has set up a defended position that forces the attack to come over ground that gives the English forces the advantage.

<Shall we just set up close enough to hold them in place and wait until hunger forces them to abandon or weaken that position? Nah, fuck that, I'm bored. CHARGE!!!!
