Less a recipe for a ration and more to create food supplies for your home kitchen.

Bouillon cubes only last around 1-2 years, if you want to replace them with something that lost longer do o the following:

Get a big canning jar and whatever vegetables(tomatoes, carrots, celery, leek, onion, parsley ect.) you normally throw into your soup or stew.

Now cut the vegetables as fine as you can and fill with them half the canning jar. Now fill the other half with salt and mix it. So one part vegetables and one part salt.

Close the jar and put it somewhere in the cupboard so that the sun doesn't shine on it and after a week its ready to use.

Whenever you would use a bouillon cube just use one or two teaspoons of this stuff, but be careful as it is unsurprisingly salty as hell.

The stuff has a shelf life of half a decade, if not longer.

>>514630

For the people who don't like the taste of vinegar, you can also pickle stuff with the help of chili peppers.

I think I remember being trained on how to make some when I was a little kid. basically we took a strip of steak and mashed it into a boatload of salt like retards and then let it sit wrapped up (wax paper or some cloth or shit) at room temp for a day or some shit. man this was a long time ago no way this can be right.

saw these pickled sausages at the store. I assumed they would be horrific, but they were only 50 cents, so I figured I would try it. they are surprisingly good, as long as you don't mind the occasional chipped toe nail showing up inside the meat every once in awhile, or whatever those little white pieces of indestructible material are.

A: take food

B: can food

C: store food

What is there not to understand? As long as you don't want to haul it around dry food just tastes worse. Store it wet and canned, keeping it good for up to 50 years or so.

If you want to haul it around (for going innawoods) using dry food is the best option. I suggest rice, noodles and dried onions.

A bag of raw onions can keep you going for a week or more. They contain a lot of energy, water and other important materials for your body, and last for a month if kept dry and in darkness. Their taste is debatable, but their juice keeps your mouth clean from bacteria and you can easily get used to eating them raw like and apple.

Also: never forget to make your own supply of soap from ash, water and fat. You can even do it in the field. Hygiene is important.

I personally have been working on a ration idea, which involves using rat meat and grasshopper flour in order to make portable soup rations. You could also take the same idea and use it for making dry-cured sausages like pepperoni and landjager.

For the non-STALKER among you: Rat meat has 650 calories per every 400 grams of meat.

Basically, combining rat meat, grasshopper flour, and some form of fattened animal(goose/duck liver?) you can make a sausage which will effectively contain an excess of daily protein, calories, and fat. If my calculations are on mark, each three to four cm piece would contain enough material to keep you going while you supplement with wild edibles or fish.

Sadly, I have yet to find anyone willing to be my guiena pigs for testing the ration in a camping environment, so I'll probably be forced to do it myself after gathering some farmland rats and wood doves. I'll let you folks know how it goes when I get around too it.

Sure thing:

> For our little recipe we'll need the following ingredients in order to get it working:

> Four Rats

< Debone the meat. Do not go overboard! Just get the good cuts like legs, loin, strap, ect. You can save scraps and bones for making soup if you want. Another idea could be fish traps, training dogs, or keeping your loyal barn cats happy.

> Goose or Duck Liver Patte

< If this cannot be found, try to find another form of fatty liver or some form of other fat. Suet can be used, but it's something you'll have to work out.

> Two Doves

< Breasts. Keep remaining bits for something similar to the scraps of four rats.

> Sea Salt - 300g

> Cricket Flour - 100g

> Paprika - 100g

> Black Pepper - 50g

> Whole Fennel - 100g

> Grinded Fennel - 40g

> Dried/Dehydrated Fruit/Berries - 25g [Coarse Grind]

> Variety of Peppercorns - 60g

> Cayenne Pepper - 30g

> Really whatever you want.

(G = Grams)

Make sure to do some research regarding curing meats and sausage making. So long as you know the basics, the recipe above should treat you fine.

The ingredients for pemmican are super easy to find. All you need is lean beef to be turned into jerky then rendered beef fat. You can get both from a butcher. I spent about 5 dollars for 3 pounds of fat. It rendered down to about 2 pounds of tallow. A 2 part beef to 1 part tallow is good. I added dried and powder dandelion greens to the mix. Granola is tasty and calorie-dense. You can add whatever you want to the recipe if you want a particular style/flavor. The only real rule would be to add maybe 1/2 tsp of flour as a binder to maybe every two cups of oats.

Quick easy base recipe off the top of my head:

4 cups rolled oats

1 tsp flour

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 cup honey

2 tbsp sunflower seed oil

Spread the oats out on a baking tray and toast them in the oven. 300°F for maybe ten minutes tops. Let cool.

Add oats, flour, and salt in large bowl and mix thoroughly.

Add honey and stir until mixture is evenly coated.

Pour mixture into cake pan or bread pan or whatever pan looks like you can cram it into the bottom and have a roughly 1/2" - 3/4" layer. Spread/mash until even, then mash the mixture to compress it as much as possible. (It works nicely to have two of the same pan so you can put the second one on top of the covered mixture and then put a bunch of soup cans or other weight into it and let it sit for a while.)

Bake at 300°F for 20-30 minutes. Check often once you pass the twelve to fifteen minute mark. You don't want it to brown at all. If you see it starting to brown anywhere, it's done.

Let cool completely. Couple hours works. Overnight is best. Refrigerate if possible.

Pop out of pan and cut into bars. Wrap/bag/portion however you want.

Now, that's obviously just the most basic, bland, boring recipe possible. You'll want to add some stuff to the mixture to jazz it up. Some possibilities:

Peanuts, sunflower seeds, walnut pieces, pecan pieces, cashews, almonds, raisins, other dried fruits/berries. Rice krispies. Cinnamon. Nutmeg. Whatever. Or you can go full hamplanet and put in chocolate chips and marshmallows and/or whatever hamplanets would want in their "health' food. Whatever you add, though, you'll have to slightly increase the amount of honey used.

You don't necessarily have to use honey - it's just the most natural sweetener I can think of. You could get away with a comparable amount of Karo syrup or something. Maple syrup (use the real stuff, though. Not no Mrs. Butterworth or some shit.) You could even make a simple syrup on your stove top (sugar + water) and add molasses for a heartier flavor. The only thing is that it has to be sweet, as the sugar caramelizes when you bake it and that's what holds the whole mess together.

Alternatively, you can cut the amount of honey in half and just barely coat everything in the bowl and spread it out on a big tray to dry. Break it up with your hands and swish it around to keep it loose. Then it makes a nice topping for yogurt (plain vanilla yogurt with some fresh berries and some of that stuff on top will fill you up and carry you to lunch for sure) or even, with the right ingredients, will make a nice bowl of cereal if that's your thing.

The reason hard tack was made in the first place is because flour can't fucking last weeks on end and the water you carry is heavy and needs to be used to drink.

There's plenty. One of my favorites is macaroni, rice, lentils, beans and chickpeas. You can pre-mix those and just have to boil them. Beans and chickpeas should be soaked and drained for 24h before cooking, but you can also skip that, the heat will denature the toxins and there's little need to soften them beforehand if giving them enough time to cook.

Just throw everything into a large pan/bowl, fill up with water, add some broth and let it boil on medium heat for about 30 minutes. Taste each ingredient to see if everything is soft, depending on how long you store legumes they might take longer to cook. Add some oil, seasoning and sauce according to your taste and voila, you got yourself a cheap and healthy meal with all macro-nutrients you need.

It's practically a version of Egyptian Koshari or Lebanese Kabsi, where they also add nuts and fried strips of carrot or onion, very tasty shit. You can add fresh greens to your liking.

Another good option is peanut butter, it has protein, carbs (depending on sugar content) and fat, you can practically live off that shit for weeks if you have to. All nuts, grains and legumes are good protein foods that store for a long time. They also got plenty of carbs and in the case of nuts oil as well.

If you buy those in bulk, you can cook 1kg of it for 1€, that's about 2 pounds for 1$. It's really cheap and doesn't fuck with your body like fast food and that China shit.

Fruit and cereal bars are also valid rations, but they often contain mostly sugar and only provide quick energy boosts. Depending on where you live, there's full-grain bread (the dark kind, with or without syrup) sealed in cans or plastic that keeps fresh for months-years. We call it Vollkornbrot or Schwarzbrot (full-grain bread/black bread), but I don't know if you can get it everywhere. It has a really dark, rich flavor and is much more nutritious than what other people call bread, a single slice of this is equal to eating 3-5 slices of toast. Back in the day Hitler advertised it to feed the people when food was getting scarce, lel.

There's also a variety of it with syrup called Pumpernickel that comes in rolls or slices packed in plastic. These are very handy to put into the bag as rations. As for stuff to put on the bread, jelly is handy, since it's rich in sugar and doesn't go bad that easily, plus it can be made or bought for cheap in bulk. You can also mash potatoes and onions, as well as various herbs to make your own pastes to put on bread.

You should also carry a variety of tea, coffee and soups with you, since they weigh almost nothing, take up little space and can really enhance your meals. A little bit of dextrose is useful as well.

He asked for rations, not for actual cooking recipes. Normally you cook those all separately and for various amounts of time, fry the rice before cooking it, etc. But that requires several pots and attention to detail, which isn't the case with rations. Rations = put it all into one pot, cook it, done. If it tastes meh, add spices. Done.

I halfway wonder if I don't have some kind of deficiency or something, with how much I like vinegar. Salt and vinegar chips, pickled okra, pickled peppers and french fries with vinegar are all delicious. Pouring vinegar from a pepper jar onto your collard greens / spinach / mustard greens is mandatory.

Been toying with the idea of making my own homegrown spicy pickled okra for a anti-fatfuck snacktime treat. Do any of y'all have recommendations for such?

What's the catch? Why isn't this in rations?

Nuts are the most calorie dense food.

Trail mix is probably the best mix of weight, no cook, easy to pack, taste and nutrition. I tried eating it for 2 weeks and got liquid shits from all the oil in the nuts, less than a week is probably fine.

Nope, summer sausage is usually beef with salts to preserve it and spices. No chicken or soy.

It's got a shelf life of at least a year.

This sort of thing is good, especially if you don't want to go into keto. I have clif bars and trail mix in my BOB.

>What's the catch? Why isn't this in rations?

The German Army uses it in its combat rations, there it is called "Roggenschrotbrot, geschnitten"(Rye Bread, cut) or simply called "Dosenbrot"(canned bread).

Because they think that the time, effort, and space they waste complaining about it is somehow magically better than someone double spacing. At least the "reddit" posters are on topic sometimes.

Reddit spacing is a meme meant to do nothing but detracts from the thread. Anyone who doesn't realize this is cancer beyond belief.
