What sect? As a convert you're probably faced with the choice of becoming sunni or shi'i. I'd say that Sunni is the only choice that makes sense. Shi'ism is a sect that is entirely based on (one interpretation) of events that happened after the Prophet(saw) passed away and after the end of the revelation. So right from the start the priorities are off. Their core tenant of imamate is not mentioned in the Quran once. If you as a recent convert have read the entire Quran, and from it understood that Ali is some kind of demi-god then by all means become shi'i, but seeing as how Ali(ra) is not even mentioned let alone described as being the khalifa let alone a demi-god then I doubt that happened.

Ali(ra) was khalifa though, even Sunnis accept this

Well yeah, but I'm saying it's not something in the Quran.

So shia hadiths then, not the Quran.

Again, depends on how you look at it. It can be interpreted that some verses in Qur'an mention Ali(ra). Qur'an is not the end-all of Islam. We are commanded to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet(pbuh), from which the hadith is formed.

>It can be interpreted that some verses in Qur'an mention Ali(ra)

It's not an interpretation, it's just a hadith saying that X actually means Y.

>Qur'an is not the end-all of Islam.

Okay? I'm saying Ali(ra) is not mentioned in the Quran. I'm not talking about hadiths. I don't believe that core articles of faith were left out of the Quran or that Islam should be based around events that happened after the final Prophet sent to mankind passed away. It diminishes the role of Prophethood.

>it's just a hadith saying that X actually means Y

And is the hadith authentic? If it is, then it is something that the Prophet revealed and, thus, we are to obey it.

>this hadith seems authentic to scholars or something…

does the quran say scholarly opinion is sufficient for establishing the truth about what the prophet said or did?

O you who believe! Obey Allah, obey His Messenger, and obey those of you who are in authority. If you differ in anything, refer it back to Allah and the Messenger, if you truly believe in Allah and in the Last Day. That is better and a more suitable outcome. [4:59]

but there's disagreement among the academics and so forth, who decides who is an authority and who isn't?
