Is child marriage and underage 'consummation' something implicitly acceptable in Islamic law?

I've been told, rightly or wrongly, that your Prophet Muhammad married Aisha at the age of six and consummated that marriage when she was only nine years old.

It's one of the only real hangups I have with Islam as a religion. I even see a lot of the sense in the often much demonised prohibitions, such as those against alcohol and other mind-numbing drugs. (What sense does it make to willingly poison yourself and do things you will only regret?) I simply can't reconcile underage relationships with my conscience.

Marriages can be arranged at any age and a marriage can be carried out before a girl menstruated. But intercourse is prohibited until after menses. A marriage contract always requires the consent of the father or surviving uncle/brother whether the bride is 6,16,or 60. Arranging longterm engagements, sometimes a decade or more, of kids today is mostly confined to the wealthiest families and the poorest families. The girl must always freely consent to the marriage or it is not valid.
