Is child marriage and underage 'consummation' something implicitly acceptable in Islamic law?
I've been told, rightly or wrongly, that your Prophet Muhammad married Aisha at the age of six and consummated that marriage when she was only nine years old.
It's one of the only real hangups I have with Islam as a religion. I even see a lot of the sense in the often much demonised prohibitions, such as those against alcohol and other mind-numbing drugs. (What sense does it make to willingly poison yourself and do things you will only regret?) I simply can't reconcile underage relationships with my conscience.
TL;DR
>Is underage intercourse and marriage actually sanctioned/implicitly permitted under Sharia?
>If so, how is this permission/sanction justifiable?
>Is the supposed 'pedophilic' relationship between the Prophet and Aisha a truthful understanding of their relationship?
I'm not looking for any 'gotcha', 'Islam BTFO' point-scoring, I'm only looking for the truth on these matters.
