hello /imouto/ it's very nice to meet you.

I'm new here so I might be doing everything wrong in which case I apologize, but from what I gather this is hobbies, advice, and discussion board?

to make a long story short: I'm trying to learn new skills, finish up college, and get my life back together sorta all at once on top of some other things

if it helps for the purpose of explaining things; in a general sense I'm looking to do computer work professionally and art as a hobby I'm supposedly somewhat decent at both but no where near as good as I'd like to be at either

there was some stuff I was wondering if people don't mind…

1. What's the least amount of sleep and food I can take in while still remaining alive and functioning?

2. How do I find a part-time job that isn't too terrible or where I could at least learn something useful while working?

3. How can I make and keep to an effective schedule?

4. How can I get better at multitasking?

if anyone had any advice or experience they could share I'd appreciate it. I try my best on my own but I don't know anywhere near as much about anything as I'd like to

I'm only able to really answer #1.

For quite a while in high school I was able to run off ~4-5 hours a night during the week, and a bit more on the weekends.

Not sleeping properly for a long time is really bad for you, it messed me up. Felt terrible a lot of the time. Sleep is important.

I'd say that you should probably at the least do 6-7 hours.

The others I'm not too sure about, sorry.

in the first place thanks for replying I always panic a little that I'm doing something or everything wrong when I get no replies

I know it's important but I'm trying to get the most out of the time available to me

any tips on falling asleep? Doctors tell me I have mild insomnia. I've tried turning everything off, breathing exercises, etc. but generally that just leaves me lying in bed awake til the morning. I usually just read and stuff til I feel tired enough to fall asleep which keeps me up late but is better than no sleep at all. This is fine most of the time but is difficult when I need to wake up early or for practical purposes.

I've tried drugs for this before, both prescription and over the counter. I got mixed results as far as how effective they were in the first place, but I'm already on a lot of prescriptions. Also my health's generally not the best even without more meds and side effects in the mix.

Hello! Nice to meet you too anon-kun!

Yes, this was once an advice thread but I ran into time constraints, so I couldn't answer questions in a timely manner!

>1. What's the least amount of sleep and food I can take in while still remaining alive and functioning?

I'm going to advise against any plans that you have for doing anything that involves lack of sleep or lack of food. But, you can go a without food and roughly about 5 days without sleep. If you still want to function properly eat snacks and sleep for about two to three hours a night. However, you'll always feel groggy and feel irritable. So what I suggest to maximize your time is to eat full meals and go to sleep early, then wake up as early as 5AM.

>2. How do I find a part-time job that isn't too terrible or where I could at least learn something useful while working?

Can't really help you in that department. Retail jobs are awful because you have to be the doormat for every ass that walks through the doors. Summer jobs are nice and give you enough money to live off of during your semester. If you have a good GPA and enough school credit hours you can get an internship that's really comfortable and pays well (depending on your degree). If you're looking for a part time job during your semester I suggest Lowes or Home Depot. Home Depot pays about 9$/hr while Lowes pays about 11$/hr. That was about enough for me to buy things like food and clothes while I was getting my math degree.

>3. How can I make and keep to an effective schedule?

Making a schedule is easy. Just go to the calendar on your phone and use that to set up a desired schedule. Following the schedule is the hardest part. You have to follow the schedule religiously and make sure that you don't waste time. Some people are better than others at this. but, it takes practice.

>4. How can I get better at multitasking?

I'm going to be blunt here.

Multitasking doesn't really exist. It was a believe that people can do multiple things at one time. Clearly, not everyone has a brain for this and it's really easy to get side tracked if try it. Instead try slotting your task and do them one at a time instead of altogether. If you do your tasks together it will most likely come out as a jumbled mess. Tie your task into your schedule and everything will be less stressful and more manageable.

I have trouble falling asleep and I don't really get hungry much but I'll do my best

there is a home depot new by I'll go by later to see if they are hiring

btw what can you use a math degree for besides teaching math?

following the schedule is definitely what I have trouble with

and rather than not multitasking I sort of tune everything out when I focus on something so it kinda makes it difficult to listen to music or talk to people while working on stuff

Yes, I have a government grant which is pretty nice imo. It also looks nice on your resume if coupled with another STEM degree. If you have trouble falling asleep you may be too stressed or you're not getting enough exercise. The causes of insomnia are difficult to pinpoint.

Sounds like you and me have the same problem. Are you taking any meds for your inattention?

Ah, It might be meds then.

Right, if that's the case you may want to visit a certain counselor and tell them about your current problem with concentration. I'm doing that now and it's working pretty well so far. I just to get organized!

Good sleep is extremely important for learning, don't try skipping it, it will seriously cripple you. Ideally you should sleep until you wake up naturally, but you should sleep at least 7 hours.

Schedules work differently for everyone, you will have to experiment with finding out what works for you. Generally it's a good idea to overestimate the time required, especially when you first start making schedules. Also you should schedule things in 30 minute blocks, if you have tasks that require less time, try grouping them. You can try building your plan backwards, for example if you want to be done with stuff by 7 PM you should start there and fill up the day until you reach the morning.

Multitasking is a way to simulate concurrent processes on a single core machine. It means that the computer is not actually doing different things at the same time, it just switches between the tasks, doing a little of each for a while so that it looks like they are running concurrently. Of course switching between the processes introduces an overhead. The same is true for us. We can't really pay attention to two things at the same time, so most of the time you are just switching between them. But unlike for the processor, the overhead for us is significant. Instead of trying to multitask you should train yourself to concentrate on only a single issue at the time.
