If you think about it, just about any way you cut a single clam shell, it is going to be a curved like and there is not really any way to recreate the normal shape that you think of on a flat plane, so most geological samples with shell fossils tend to look like a lot of these random bent lines.

India and Japan don't really hate China per se. India is contending with it's neighbor Pakistan and Maoist rebels in the Indian country side. China is looking at Pakistan as a major trade partner and India and Pakistan were always had tense relations after the Brits left. So, China partnering with Pakistan is a threat to the Indian economy and maritime traffic. It's also believed by Indian intelligence that China is sending arms to the Maoist rebels which are causing logistical issues in the countryside.
Japan sees China's expansion in the SCS as a conflict with major maritime lanes that helps supply Japan. In addition to that, China building islands in the SCS means that they could also try building islands in the Yellow Sea or become hostel towards Japan's maritime lanes. So, in short, Japan and India are defending their economic interests by strengthening their navy and their maritime lanes.
