I personally believe hypnotism is possible. But every time I come across one of these acts where someone tries to prove hypnotism is true I swear they do more to turn me sceptical because it is so obvious they faked stuff.

Recently I happened across a youtube video of someone doing a "TEDx" presentation by someone named Albert Nerenberg which was called "Is Hypnotism Fake?". The act itself started out very well. It seemed very well researched and used real historical information. He even seemed to do a very good job of inducing a trance.

The problem comes into play when he decided to call "volunteers" onto the stage to prove hypnotism works based on people who failed to force open their eyes when he induced the trance.

Here is the thing though. Before the presentation even began a specific number of chairs were setup on the stage. When the number of "volunteers" all got up on stage it was the exact number of chairs they had setup.

… Seriously? You just happened to put out the exact number of chairs as you needed for the number of audience members who would after wards be induced into having their eyes too heavy to be forced open? You did not have anyone leftover forced to stand or any empty seats left over? You somehow placed the exact number of chairs you needed on the stage for the number of volunteers you would get?

I am going to reuse a word in a different way than I previously used it. I spot a setup. I can spot how chairs were not the only thing you placed in that room in advance.

Why do these fake hypnotists persist in trying to prove hypnotism is real while using easily spotted tricks like this? All they are doing is further cementing hypnotism into the grey areas of the occult and making cynics of even the scientific and psychological minds who want to believe it is real.

Because people who have an interest in doing talks like tedx (which has really low standards for who gets a talk) are generally people looking to spread their brand to unsuspecting normies, and have a vested financial interest in the show going off without a hitch. Being a good hypnotist doesn't mean being a good showman and vice versa, nor does being a good researcher in those combinations.

Plus doing anything while filming is likely to result in odd behaviors. You might find more people who are hyperaware due to the camera/audience and thus fail to be hypnotized when it's being used as a "performance" than those who are able to go down under those conditions easily.

Studies show if you engage in some fake hypnosis and even tell the person it's fake, they're more easily hypnotized next time. You just need to open your mind to the possibility of it working.

If you want to prove hypnosis to someone, send them links to medical studies showing hypnosis being effective at fixing things.

Because actual hypnosis just isn't very spectacular or interesting to watch. Long, regular conditioning to make your subject more susceptible to your suggestions does not make for an interesting show in any way. Waving your clock in front of somebody's face and making them act like a chicken does

Yeah, seen that. Terrible… Giggling girl trying to "fake" karate moves. OTOH, some guys "refused" to go asleep or play along and were ignored.

Eh, having the exact number of chairs on stage with the exact number of volunteers doesn't make it fake.

There could have been something not filmed like "I'm going to need these many volunteers for this demo" waaaaay beforehand.

Stage hypnosis is tricky. By the end of the demo he only had one or 2 people actually listening and actually paying attention. Those people stayed under.

Stage hypnosis is a beast in of it's own.

1. First, the people most likely willing to step on stage are going to be people willing to act like an assclown.

2. He put the premise that hypnosis is not fake, and then challenged people, is also why some people on stage didn't really do anything, "I'll fool him"

3. The guy's not fake, but it's "Showy" and it's meant to be "Showy"

Hypnosis itself is real. You really can perform surgery on people in trance. (Esidaile State).

People are receptive to suggestion, and are suggestible.

But, yes you can't be made to do anything that you don't want to do… though manipulative assholes can shape and preface things to make it more enticing to want to do those things that you thought you might have not wanted to do.

simple answer: hypnosis only works on you if you believe it will otherwise you won't b able to b hypnotized
