I plan to update thumbs for gifs/videos to be animated themselves, playing when you mouse over them. I'll take ten frames or so and let the user choose to start at the 20% mark or whatever to mitigate the black frame thumb issue. At this point, I'll also be able to integrate those more interesting frames into the dupe matching system and have video dupe detection.
The max thumb size of 200x200 is a sufficiently old rule that it is a small pain to now undo. I'd like to make it more flexible, but I suspect the interim solution will be to allow the user to scale the 200x200 up and just show it bigger rather than generating and loading and caching larger images.
