You're better off just copying his style for the backgrounds.

Use one tool to do the outlines, fill the, with colours then use lighten and burn tools for shading and lighting.

It would be better you start with a little mod, by creating a new girl with extra story and adding her to existing mods. Bonus points if she can be played with in 'Silver', and / or 'Sad Crab' and 'Feodosiy' versions. You can introduce a 'non-cute' non-chibi background char of course, like the Sad Crabs do with their 'Innocent Witches' game. Would look strange at first but me prefers 'non-cute' definitely.

Don't know how serious you are about it, but perhaps I got an idea for you - if you really are eager to get your hands dirty on something…

There is another demo derived from WT called 'Life with Hermione'. Running with Ren'Py like original WT, no background chibis - maybe you would like to mod that one more? You have to learn basic Python anyway, and it sounds you might want to create something similar after all?

Check the 'Akabur Games' thread over at ULMF where it's mentioned. Some member(s) translated most of it to english (mega link on following page, be sure to get the latest):

A dev called Vassago was doing this, I really liked the concept of the demo tbh. Although Genie is included, mc is another guy sent back to Hermione to help out. So that char is just there in the beginning, to connect story to the original game, but that's all. Seems development sadly died a while ago. Thank you Anon for your great response! I really liked the Life With Hermione, even if it was very short and very… hum, Russian. Most of it wasn't translated, and it seems abandoned, but it's very similar to my idea.

I forgot to mention it, but I have good experience with Ren'py and Python. I've written games using the Ren'py, non-porn, of course.

I intent to start from "scratch" (using some of Akabur's art and the great Hermione Generator). My first goal is to lay a very solid foundation to the game, optimizing the myriad of image files and writing more concise code for the whoring/events system. I intent to use a simpler day/night cycle, with more elements taken from the books, dropping the grind report system and the chibis (making the chibis walk comprises a lot of Akabur's code).

In a few days I'll post a link to a Github repository for you guys to get some updates. I think I'll be able to layout the system in the next few months.

Well, then it's smooth game for you. Don't need to learn first, that is a plus. Still not sure if you need that chibi background stuff at all tbh. Because of this I told you to start with modding a girl into existing mods. You might get a clue if this is what you want, for all chars with a new game. Not really a fan of it.

More important, it would be nice to have plenty of locations, or rooms to visit at the least. Other locations worked well with PT, don't know why Akabur decided to only use one room with WT. And for your new game you don't need same style backgrounds, too. Could use some real images instead, change them lateron for drwaings if you like. Other locations is a big advantage of LwH over the original already.

It will be a full rewrite, differing a great deal. Akabur's Witch Trainer is an excellent game in my opinion, not for the game system, but instead because Akabur has a good feel for mixing naughty and humor in very exact doses. WT story is very silly, making the game shine with its puns, clever jokes, inside jokes and whammy-ness.

My intention is to preserve this aspect, but with a new story. I already have a very, very rough draft: the player assumes the role of an unnamed headmaster, who becomes headmaster after Dumbledore's death in sixth year. The Voldemort plot line is absent from the game, let us imagine he was destroyed by Harry at the end of Prince too. The player wants free reign over the school, but the Witches Rights Movement keeps blocking his plans, so he (with some help from other (male) professors) start on a plan to corrupt the leaders of WRM.

I already have the basics for three trainable witches: there is Hermione, of course, as the head of WRM, Ginny Weasley as her right-hand woman, and Angelina Johnson as her secretary. Each girl will have different events, different routes and scenes, so the player can get more game hours.

Something I always found missing in original WT is the lack of consequences during Hermione's training. In this new WT of mine, the characters will interact more, and their sluttiness levels will affect the outcome of many scenes and decisions.

Also, the first great decision the player will take as acting headmaster is choosing a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher: there will be four candidates and while they will not show up at first (lack of art and code, for now), this decision will greatly influence the training, as the girls will interact with the professor.

All in all, each girl can be trained to be Your Slut, or Everybody's Slut, so you can have different endings as you train them to your likeness.

In more technical aspects, my intention is to use some of the resources laid out by Hermione Generator to greatly reduce the amount of graphical resources, making the download file a lot more manageable as I add more content. The girls will share basic resources, like the body, head and clothes, and Ren'py will compose their faces and unique characters in-game. There is more or less about 35 different expressions for each girl, some outfits (both proper and nasty) and many poses. After releasing a few versions of the game my intention is to attract the attention of an artist who could expand the game with new characters, outfits and poses.

For now, I'm shamelessly stealing art from various mods and resources packs I'm stumbling upon in the internet. Silver Trainer and Sad Crab offer most resources, but I need to painstakingly Photoshop them to fit the base models. So, baby steps for now.

I didn't want to post screens yet, but I was so happy because I made this work I'll post something. Yes, it's straight out lifted from Akabur's, but the technical aspect makes this Ginny Weasley so interesting.

Akabur laboured to make all the images of WT. He redrew them countless times, so the game file was very heavy. One of the first optimizations most modders did was to separate the image file in smaller interchangeable chunks, like the eyes, the hair, the body. I took one of those mods, slowly photoshopped it, and we have this Ginny Weasley.

She has 150+ variants (expressions, outfits, lewdness), using only a handful of files, most of them shared with Hermione's character. This makes a very efficient way of using chars.

I also coded a special function so ren'py will automatically generate the girls based on their current whoreness level, mood and the player's options. No more shifting and changing clothes randomly. I'm currently implementing the whole pack for Angelina's body, soon I'll post some images. For now, as I have no artist to help me, we will use the "same face, different hair characterization" method. At least, the three girls have brown eyes in the book. Maybe when I implement Daphne we'll have an artist to draw her.

The game has the not-so-temporary title "Witch Trainer: Black Label".

My next step is to design the playable interface.

I'm from South America, so I had to pay a pretty penny for this machine, but I'm a journalist/photographer, so it's basically the "industry standard". But hey, at least it has some Linux commands to settle my poor heart.

Oh, I was following the work of Sad Crab, and some resources used in my version were lifted from their Innocent Witches, but I hated their fucking game to hell and back, so much text for nothing. In the future, I will ditch their text frame (theirs is horribly cropped) and make one of my own, but for now this one works.

I'm terrible slow in Photoshop, so I'm editing some of the resources. The test to generate Hermione ran ok, so I currently have two characters. Good enough for 5 days of lackluster coding.

South America also isn't a country, but part of the American Continent… Mac is constructed upon a hybrid kernel called Darwin, which itself is based on NextSTEP OS, BSD, Mach and a pletora of other software. Darwin is mostly POSIX-compliant, so it shares a lot of similarities to Linux, but it was never certified as a POSIX kernel. It's also Unix-compliant, furthering the similarities to Linux. All in all, MacOS is a great system with low overhead, good graphics support, more user control over the system and it runs free software as a dream. Took me literally less than a minute to put Ren'Py to run, as python libraries come out of box with Mac.

So this girl is already in use, there would be two of them, which is bad. Just saying.

I repeat it once more, it would be excellent start out small and create a new girl, including her into the existing mods. I could think of an unknown or unused girl for this. You could create your very own, based on characters of the IP, so you don't need to use OC and OP, nobody can say anything. May I give you an example?

I'd invent a girl, and a story for her that is independent to the rest of the OP. Like Alicia Hornblower, a muggle-blooded relative of Horatio Hornblower. Look that char up, read about to get a feeling for what you might want to include. I just say 'snobby brit' for once. Story arc could begin like this:

She is a shy one at the beginning, newly arrived and has no friends around. But she would become more comfortable, and if opening up (making her become 'adventurous' by remembering her to her great ancestor) she can be trained to be a dirty little slut for pc. She would also be the one later trying to beat Hermione at challenges, because 'there can be only one' (pun on 'Highlander', chance of infights of the two girls, pc might need to disrupt this at one point)… And yada yada.

Also you could create new locations like the toilets / baths (e.g. where that ghost girl Myrtle is located, could be included too), possibility for glory hole or washing lessons with pc. Even more important would be a dormitory, to visit girls 'per chance' at day or night, or get an invitation from girls. The idea would be the pc can change to other places, encounter girls there, do things. Would give great replay value.

OP, if you could achieve what I mentioned (new girl(s), new locations, independent story arc) you would have done already more for the game than lots of others out there. Begin with little changes to get used to it, like I wrote it up for you. Might still consider bigger changes lateron, maybe a remake one time. There are so many who like to start out big time, lose interest or lack time to spare, and nothing is done in the end. Don't make this mistake. Keep it small but beautifull.

It's OS X, to be precise. The term 'Mac OS' can be considered to still be in use for the legacy OS for older PPCs, numbered up to 'MacOS 9'. OS X is based on Darwin, the best BSD derived OS more modern POWER machines had had in a long time… Plus the faggots, again, changed its name to plain 'macOS', for whatever reason.

Linux has got similarities to Unix (BSD, Solaris), as mentioned. Because OS X derived from Darwin, which itself incorporates legacy from BSD, and Linux had been developed independently and is younger, I'd say it's the other way around. /rant

I thank you again for your continuous interest in my little project. And I really appreciate your concern about going-too-big-burning-out-too-soon, but I do have experience with Ren'py games, just I never wrote a porn one. I've working on making playable visual novels for some small portuguese speaking authors, partnering with different artists and writing very unique short games, so I have some confidence with the system and the language.

Thus, I find it *harder* to mod Akabur's original code or Silver Trainer code, as they can be quite confusing, mainly because Ren'py doesn't explicitly imports or declares thing, it just works, so it makes harder to debug.

My current problem is just the lack of graphics, as I'm no artist and the ones I know refuse to "do this porno shit". Their loss, I guess. I'm more interested in the technical, logical and fictional aspects of the game, so I'm quite content with just stapling some 'shooped graphics in place and hope for the best. In the future, when the core game runs smoothly, I'll contact some artists so we can improve the graphics aspect and move away from reusing broken Akabur's art.

For now, I'm involved with the dynamic creation of character's clothes and expressions. The code works for simple tests, but it still is very messy. After some polishing, I'll post some tests. Thank you once again for your interest!
