Incluso en la cultura nórdica las deidades eran casi pálidas y de pelo casi blanco. La gente con piel muy clara era considerada fea, bruta o incluso estúpida. El pelo rubio no era particularmente atractivo, pero el pelo rojo de las bretonas sí llamaba mucho la atención, tanto así que muchas mujeres romanas comenzaron a teñirse el pelo rojo. La piel del mediterráneo era considerada la epítome de la civilización y belleza.
