I think porting the SDT stuff would be a copyright violation. That was a big hurdle in remake efforts, and even a concern for hosting and distribution of some SDT mods. Nobody ever had permission to reuse Konashion's stuff, so you needed to draw a completely new set of sprites before a project could safely go anywhere.
As a consequence, the project structure becomes more complex. Either the artist is working for free (under some kind of contract which promises a portion of future revenues) or the project manager reaches into his own pocket to commission artwork (as Hyperdellia did). In either case, people are worried about financial issues from day 1 (instead of focusing entirely on aesthetics, gamefeel, software architecture, etc) and there are more opportunities for someone to become disgruntled (because they feel cheated, marginalized, overworked, underpaid, etc).
I've used Konashion's sprites when creating tech-demo projects, but you can't really proceed on that basis. If you release a demo and seek crowdfunding, then your project is vulnerable to takedown (because you violated ToS on day 1). If you invite artists to participate then they'll be wary, because you've already demonstrated that you don't respect intellectual property.
If you follow Hyperdellia's example then you might sink hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars into a project before you realize that it's hopeless. Instead, it's much safer to eschew gameplay completely, write an erotic visual novel, spend a few hundred $ on a handful of CG images, and sell that shit on Steam.
