what i mean is that some of the characters have actual personalities and struggles, even though some of it may seem cheesy or lame.
Take Nico for example, superficially she is shown to be a cutesy character. however that is a facade, and she's actually quite attention whoreish. Now if this was an industry-shit anime, her personality would just be that. but it isn't, as it is shown she has other traits such as: caring for her brothers, working part-time to support her mom, doing chores around the house and having dedication to becoming a school idol.
there's also Umi. she acts strict and is the more sensible of the members. she actually objects when her idol group does something risque. Not only that, she pushes others and herself to be disciplined enough to achieve their goals. they do play her Dandere characteristics out a bit too much.
Point is, the cast of love live has actual character writing, albeit a bit flawed, which is something industry-shit idol stuff lacks. Normally it's just cute girls in cute dresses just to attract a female demographic

by suggestive, i meant indicative of a light yuri ship with no NSFW stuff. the song is just the nice,light type of romantic that both guys and girls can love. besides i loved the song way before i even knew what the lyrics meant, though it is pretty easy to guess it's a light yuri song by just listening to it.

But anime today is really not aimed at women, unless it is Japanese teenagers that follow trends for a while and buy merchandise. In Japan, if you love something you show your love for it with merchandise. Spongebob in Japan, for example, got dubbed in a way to make it appealing for teenager girls.
