Both have their merits. Lolita is more "cute," while Victorian is more "fancy." Lolita also feels more "modern" in a way, though it certainly draws a lot of inspiration from Victorian.

That's understandable. I like cuteness, but some lolita stuff pushes it to a tacky extreme. While I find mainstream modern fashion is often a bit too simple and utilitarian for my tastes, my taste in lolita tends toward more subdued styles, sort of like an intersection between sweet, classic, and casual. On the other hand, I also think some Victorian and Victorian-inspired fashion can get a little on the kitschy side when it's overly ornate.
