So of late I've been fiddling with a raspberry pi and I got to thinking.
What do we know in regards to the security situation with these things?
Are they compromised out of the box like most modern processors and mobile devices?

The question is whether you trust Broadcom really.

anything with a network stake is compromised

So the wireless chipset is the most concerning part?
Well suppose thats to be expected.
And I suppose its impossible to turn it off or disable it?

it's a System on a chip (SoC). It contains most of the shit on there including processing. If anything would be compromised then it would probably be this chip. Unless their default raspian image somehow hid a rootkit without anyone noticing

So that's a no.
And one would hope that any rootkit hidden in their default OS would have been noticed by now

Yeah I wouldn't worry about their out of the box shit. I'd worry more about what you install and run on it. The OS is open source so someone has probably looked through it all.

Did you design it yourself?
YES = SECURE 4U ONLY
NO = BOTNET
Raspberry Pi + binary blobs = BOTNET

Also there is a chink SBC that is a FOSS build
Nano Pi I think.
