All of the cutesy furry buzzwords today make my stomach turn. Birb, snek, snep, doge, whatever.

It might have been endearing if we didn’t also fuck up words in non-endearing ways, like “you’re.” But we do, and this is just saying “fuck it, why try” to spelling in general. Plus I hate grownups talking to other grownups in baby voices, which these terms all sound like to me.

>fuck up words

>not realizing language evolves through people creating new uses for it and that contractions were originally seen as trash grammar but are now seen as acceptable

>People correcting each other's grammar and spelling is relatively modern and in the era of William Shakespeare people would spell words however they wanted. Shakespeare himself signed his name differently most of the the time he spelled it.

The language is gonna evolve whether you want it to or not. In 100 years nobody will think differently about what you're groaning about.

I’m not angry that language is evolving. I’m angry that a children’s book from the 1800s reads like an AP literature textbook from 2018, and because even though MS Word literally marks your writing up as you type it, you can’t read a newspaper article or chapter of a novel without finding at least one misuse of apostrophes or verb tense.

I perceive people who can’t master their native language as stupid. I am working on that, but we are a social species. If someone can’t commit a middle schooler’s level of effort to learning how to communicate with others it makes me doubt their commitment to Sparkle Motion.

Snep? Absolutely fucking disgusting. My bf is a snow leopard and I avoid anyone that unironically uses snep.

>>97570

Problem is a lot of these misspellings, like all memes in general, are really good inside jokes but very terrible outside jokes. Memes generally are dead when they reach meme status because what originally made them funny (the inside joke) is lost when it becomes a reference to the reference. (lol I use the Internet and know about the doges and the puppers and the much wow!) The final nail in the coffin that sends a meme to purgatory is when it gets slammed in pop culture mass media like how "trash panda" fell out of vernacular when Chris Pratt used the term to refer to Rocket Raccoon. I don't follow Marvel very well, but this struck me as 4th wall pandering, because he shouldn't have been around human culture during the time period that trash panda had a rise, anyway?

Listen up fuckeroos. English has no diminutive form for nouns. A diminutive form is a feature of most languages (but not English) that lets you subtly change a word to give it a sense of intimacy, endearment, or smallness. The closest we've got is the -y form, like changing dog into doggy, cat into kitty, and bird into birdy. The problem with those is they've become associated with childhood and immaturity.

Internet discussion - with its brevity and informality - is creating words that fill the social need for a diminutive form in English. It won't be a true syntactical form but we're getting new words that still fill the hole in a different way. Dog becomes doggo, pup becomes pupper, bird becomes birb, snake becomes snek, hyena becomes yeen. Hate them now (new words usually are) but they do fill the hole.

your linguistics degree won't save you from the decontextualising effects of interstitial social-capital in the ironysphere that is the modern internet. what is being created is not diminutive, but memetic in nature. when that collides with e-contrarianism upstream from the culture-factory-blue-tick nexus the term will become blase, instead of signifying being in-the-know it signals being old and out of touch.

In layman's terms, 97604 is ignoring the context of memes on the Internets and the natural progression of slang words. While English is certainly a flawed language (hence, we lack a proper diminutive form like other languages, which means to speak in an informal 'cutesy' way we use what's commonly called baby talk) 97604 attributes the entire structure of meme words such as 'doge' to the need for diminutive language, whereas 97626 argues the depersonalized and ironic nature of the Internet makes memes a completely different structure that strictly have an expiration date.

I agree with the latter. A lot of memes fall more into idiom status where you just make a reference and people are like, "Hahah, I get it."

The concept of a meme has kind of changed since the term was applied to idiotic 4chan exchanges of image macros.

This is what I always thought a meme was. An idea that spreads thru human culture without a story or a verbal explanation. Kids still draw this symbol today and have no idea why, It just looks cool. You see it and you imitate it. It’s like the marker from Dead Space.

All of these internet phenomena are different from memes. They all have stories, and there’s an “in the know” crowd for them. But it boils down to the same kind of inside joke that makes anything else funny, like when you quote a movie at an appropriate moment in life and someone else laughs.

Hearing someone talking like “oh lel hurr durr yeenieweenie lololol” and then adopting the same idiotic tone is not the same thing as seeing a strange new idea and being compelled or inspired by it. Quoting Homestarrunner or 4chan is the same thing as quoting Monty Python.

I actually like yeen, boi, and a lot of these. Calling dogs doggos. They're just silly and fun.

But for some reason I can't stand thicc. That's not how you spell it! Even though I sort of get it... if you call a girl thicc, it means she's voluptuous. If you call a girl thick, it could mean she's slow in the head.

This one actually has some merit, because red pandas were almost called a 'wha' per the noise they make. Arguably, the person who was suggesting that as their name was actually the first western discoverer of the animal, but lesser panda/red panda took off instead. They're both fitting, because panda roughly comes from the word for 'eater of bamboo,' but people more likely associate the word with bear because of the larger, dumber beasts that bear the name.

At least it's not as bad as people calling coyotes "yotes"

Even non-furfags do this. I live in a rural area and I hear it all the time, it's about as bad as yeen.

I've never heard that one before, probably because "coyote" doesn't take that long to say. Most I've heard is someone referring to them as wolves or wild dogs. even though there hasn't been wolves in the area since the 1800s or so

The barking and yelping from a pack of those things can get pretty annoying at night.

just like with 'yeen', furries often do it because it's the "quirky and cute" way of saying it

I could understand equating seals with dogs, but what the fuck do deer and dogs have in common other than being mammals? Isn't a wolf a forest dog anyway?
