 No.61332[Last 50 Posts]

Of all the Furry webcomics I have seen popping up the last few years, I think this one has the most promise. I found a flyer for it a few weeks ago at FC.

The creator actually seems pretty dedicated and must have their own source of income, because I haven't seen the begging cup come out yet.

If they manage to stick to the weekly update schedule they put out there.... well, best not jinx it. lol

It's got like 20 or so pages out there, and I'm going to dump them here since it does not seem like it matters if you go to the official site, but if you care (since I just know someone will care), it is right there on some of the art or you could just google the title.

Impressive. Looks like they're separating races by regions. The starting town is cat people so far. The layer of walls remind me of Attack on Titan. Wouldn't it make more sense to put a wall around the farmland instead of exposing it to the outer desert? The art's pretty great. I wonder how they will handle magic and technology?

So, I don't know a lot, because there is not a lot to know yet, but I do think the way it works is that the city you see there is just for the cat people and the names on the OP post under the character's names are the cities they come from respectively.

And I pretty sure it is a thing with the cats where there only a few thousand of them left in that giant city, and I don't think they are stuck in there by titans or anything, so I imagine there are more farms too that we don't see.

Also, I am pretty sure on that last page you are seeing carriages carrying some of the other characters arriving. I am guessing it might be like a Fellowship of the Ring thing where they all traveled to this place to meet, and the plot will be explained or something.

I gathered that from the mini promotion at a convention.

True, it's kind of an unfortunate color pallet on those two, but I'll forgive it for having a bird girl in armor. I think it will look much more varied after the rest of the characters show up.

Also, I want to vote yes in the hopes of this turning anime-violent. Like Made in Abyss lol. Seems all cute until someone is puking blood.

Well, also, I think for the style they seem to be going for here (some qusai cel shading sort of hints of old-anime with some Disney style undertones) it is just well done in general.

Some web comics are just a cut above (most) anything on shelves. In the furry world, seriously, look at Lackadaisy. I dare you to find a comic published by the big guys at your LCS that can compare. And while Age of Arcadia is no Lackadaisy art-wise (but seriously, what is?), it also seem they are trying to keep to a real schedule while having extremely good art (while Lackadaisy kinda misses on the schedule thing), and at least decent dialog so far (I am yet to roll my eyes, so for me personally, that is a good sign).

Sooooo... I think that you are right and that modern comics are a flaming-dumpster-fire, but I also think this comic is just pretty good on its own.

And if this could become like, a new standard for webcomics, I think that would be just another massive nail in the big publishers coffins.

It is an interesting style. It has elements of Disney, and perhaps older (80's/90's) Anime in it I think, but not the terrible modern "animu" look that everyone makes fun of. There is actually some structure to the characters (like how mouths are not just slapped on the sides of faces in profile).

It seems like they are putting stuff out between pages too. I like this one. :P Plant girls.

Almost a year later, and I've still seen no reason why I should give a shit about this comic. Not being mean or anything, it's just so bland and boring. The art is good and the command of the English language is acceptable, but other than that... there are generic characters, and they do generic things, but nothing of consequence is happening. Nothing is interesting; it's just OOOOH MAGIC! FANTASY! PRINCESS! EXPLOSIONS! MILITARY! It reminds me of every new Dreamworks film: lots of flashy shit happening to entertain the kids, but nothing of real substance. We've gone 40 pages and nothing has happened. This is why a lot of good artists would benefit highly from having a good writer on board. The plot might still end up being good — it's not possible to know yet — but this pacing is atrocious.

I partially agree with you.

When I met the artist?/writer? at a convention earlier this year, I asked him a little about that.

They seem pretty aware of it and gave me a little insight. (They also seem shocked anyone even knows they exist, since they are pretty quiet)

Apparently this was originally pitched as a series to Netflix that would have been like six, 1-hour long episodes, and the response was that Netflix was “interested”, but Netflix is not like a TV network, and will not give a budget to a project based on a Story Bible alone (they’ll air almost anything if you fund it yourself though, apparently, but I get the feeling this team is faaar from rich).

To get a budget and "prove themselves" they basically had to make a finished storyboard for what is essentially a 6-hour movie. So this web-comic that you are looking at is essentially a fancy storyboard. It makes sense because if you look at these first 50 pages as if there were animation, it times out very nicely for part of a first act of a three-act-structure.

But also they said since Netflix is a much more uncertain thing now, they are going to ramp things up a bit faster and just focus on it as a web-comic only, but that they also don’t want it to end up like other web-comics where everything feels rushed and sloppy. At this point, I feel like, even if a meteor-space-demon crashed down on the next page and a fight scene broke out, it could not feel rushed though. LOL.

I don’t mind the slow set up, since the creator(s?) are not asking for anything, and when I suggested a Pateron to the guy at the convention, to help speed things up, he said something to the ends of “We might, but only when the intro and set up stuff is done and we’re getting into the action.” And also he said that, at that point, if they got paid they would automatically up the page releases to 2-3 pages a week because they view any patrons as “employers” (which I guess is a decent attitude to have).

So yeah, I do kind of agree with you. It needs to hit that up-slope on the bell curve soon. The guy I met was back in the late Spring, and he said he thought they would get the slow stuff out of the way in the Summer, and that after the intros, everything was re-written without the Netflix pacing and a comic more in mind, and that the action pick-up would happen in the fall, so I am hopeful.

Also, yes, I think you are the reason for the tire fix. When you pointed it out, I hit them up on their Facebook and they seemed genuinely thankful for having that pointed out to them. I will say, it is nice to see a creator that can take a criticism politely, and is even appreciative for it, and then actually follows through on changing the thing.

Maybe I should hit them up again and suggest they pick up the story pace heh.

A lot of beginning writers think you have to cram all the exposition and character-building into the first part of a story, but that just leads things to being drawn out and boring. Starting things out with the explosion seems like a nice attempt to immediately grab the audience's attention, but it just seems so irrelevant to the plot right now. I can't even tell you who the main character is; the scientist? the princess? the... apprentice girl? Maybe there's not supposed to be one.

Really, I'm at a bit of a loss to explain why everything just feels so slow and boring, when I attempt to quantify it. I just keep going back to thinking just how much STUFF a typical serialized manga can cram into its first chapter: introducing the main character(s), the setting, the world, the conflicts, everything... and usually in a double-length chapter (so 40-50 pages). At first I thought it might be panel count per page, but it's an average of 6, same as here.

To be fair, I'm out of my element. I don't draw comics (I write novels), so I couldn't possibly determine what to do about this. It's just a blind critique based on emotion rather than knowledge of the craft. The best I can seem to do in this case is offer nit-picks.

I am not an expert either, and I admit, I am drawing a lot from 1 conversation.

2 things that come to mind though—

If you want to use anime vs. manga as an example, if you time out an anime version of a manga, or rather if you compare the two, things are always edited for the anime with lots of extra visual “space”, because if you hard-ran a manga directly as an anime, you would end up with 8 or 9 minutes per volume. I think the fact that, at least this first part (before they decided to stop trying for Netflix), is basically the reverse of that— a cleaned up storyboard designed for animation, is the reason why it visually feels like the pacing is dragging. You’re looking at maybe like 10 minutes of animation dragged out over 50 pages. They literally have entire pages that are just establishing the setting, as you would in animation. Except in animation it would be represented as a 3 second establishing shot, overlaid with a voice over, and then cut into character interactions. Here we get a page like that sitting there for a week. If this was 3 pages a week coming out, it would certainly be moving at a more reasonable clip—but, we wont be getting 3 pages a week anytime soon because they can’t afford to do that without a Patreon, and they wont set up a Patreon until they get to the meat of the story, so it is like a slow vicious cycle for the moment.

And also, from what I can tell, this is like an ensemble cast deal. It’s like asking who is the main character of Power Rangers or Game of Thrones. Clearly Cassie is the “team leader” but I don’t think this is going to be from her perspective wholly or anything.

Anyway, the slow start aside, I was attracted to it for some of the reasons you said: I like the art, but moreover, they have a good command of the English language.

….And…. (the thing I’m almost afraid to say)… unlike most modern web-comics (furry or otherwise), it’s not soapbox-preaching. It almost feels disconcerting to read a story that just “is.” It’s not pretentious or up its own ass.

If it were the typical modern web-comic, I could see it going like:

Scene 1: Cassie and the Dr. exit the blown up lab. Cassie makes a passive aggressive snarky comment (despite him being her mentor) about how dumb men blow things up.

Scene 2: Instead of soft, motherly advice, the Princess informs Cassie to be ready because a she is going to lead this new generation of young girl characters to fight the patriarchy (in some not-so-subtle scenario symbolizing that), and that her training is complete and she is ready for the task.

Scene 3: The others girls arrive—each one stronger, and more independent than the last. They are each so unique that they all wear the same Hot Topic inspired outfits and have the same faux-hawk haircut, dyed varying shads of purple or maroon… and maybe the Plant Girl is “plus-sized.”

IDK… I don’t wanna jinx it and have the story morph into that. But for now, I am forgiving it the slow-start transgression. Its straightforward nature is oddly refreshing. I don’t want to give it too much credit, but in the gnarly sea of what the soap-box web-comic market has become, some Tolken-esque build up, that feels like it is going in a direction, albeit sloooowly is oddly refreshing.

It will 100% be about the follow through. If it slowing builds to something good, I will back it wholeheartedly. It if slowly builds and then slow-walks off a cliff…. Well, here’s hoping it does the first thing.

Also, to keep it from being a block of only text, here’s another page.

Yeah, I suppose that might be something. It's currently in this awkward middle-ground where it's sort of a storyboard, and sort of a comic. Too slow for a comic, and WAY too "polished" for a storyboard.

Also, I don't like how cluttered the genre is right now. We've got magic right alongside science fiction, fantasy with steampunk, royalty with a regimented military, and now what appear to be robot girls right alongside furries (and, for that, the furries include cats with birds). Yeah, I get that this is supposed to be a meeting of unique peoples from disparate corners of the globe, but again, I'm at a loss for what I'm supposed to THINK. Which of these people are the good guys? Which ones are the bad guys? Which ones are important and which are side characters? What is the political situation that prompted this? How did so many different peoples come to exist? Is this city where everything is going to happen, or is it merely the setting for this single meeting? I don't mean to say I want to be spoonfed information, of course. But these sorts of things should want to make the reader desire to find out the answers, not overwhelm them with confusion about why there are so many questions. Like I said: cluttered.

When you mentioned Tolkien, it made me think how the whole story of Lord of The Rings started with just one little hobbit, and his small place in the big world. Then that big world was introduced over time, not dumped on our laps all at once. To parallel what's going on in this comic, imagine that the story had literally started out with the Council of Elrond. It would have been painfully overwhelming, what with all the different peoples coming together, the threat of the Ring, the history of the Great Evil, the political drama of Gondor and the true identity of Aragorn, and the introduction of every member of the Fellowship all at once, when you don't know anything before then.

All I can say is it makes more sense for this to be Chapter Two or even Three. Spend the first one just in this city (if it's the main setting) and just with the main characters (if they're the main characters) and set up and solve a MINOR conflict to establish things, before jumping right into what appears to be a WORLD-SPANNING conflict.

Also, soapboxing is one thing, but a story must have a POINT. There's no reason to tell one if there's no substance or deeper meaning to it. Even kid's media has depth.

Yeah, I know what you mean about it being really eclectic.

Since we literally know nothing about the writer, I can't say if this is all a set up, and there will be a payoff, and everything we see here is thought out and will make sense, or if this is just some "lol so random" thing. I kinda feel, with the methodical pace, it HAS TO be the first one.

Also, I think it was confirmed that this arc will be revealed to be called "Kingdom of Dust" and the entire thing does take place in this city, and that for unspecified reasons, this city is particularly behind technologically.

But you know, there's only one way to know for sure, and that's to go bug the creators on Facebook.... which I'm going to go do now. :P

(FYI, even if you are not as forgiving/hopeful as I am, I'm just glad there is someone else willing to talk to me about this series since the creator(s) are not really advertising it)

Anyhow, next page too... I do like the robots (but I like robots in general). I just hope there is an explanation why the robots look like robot humans and not robot furries.

Okay, off to bug the Facebook.

Yes but you gotta crack a few labs to make a science omelet.

I think I'd lose respect for the creator if they did that. I'm obviously waiting for some conflict to happen, but having the camera pan over to show some proverbial Littlefinger and Wormtongue in the corner jerking it to the princess while waxing about their schemes would make me punch me screen and ask for the cost of the free ticket back.

Don't like nitpicking about the story OP, but I say that with all these characters they are all introducing all at the same time... Who the hell is the main... MAIN character?

I mean... Perhaps they could first introduce everyone then the main character but... At that point the main character wouldn't be actually the one 'focused on' by the audience, wouldn't it? Predicting that 80% off these characters will become side chars

>I don't mean to say I want to be spoonfed information, of course. But these sorts of things should want to make the reader desire to find out the answers, not overwhelm them with confusion about why there are so many questions.

This is definitely an ensemble-cast story. I don't want to give a tiny little webcomic too much credit, but I get the vibe of Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings--just in the sense that I think this is one of those "everyone meets up before the big adventures begin" sort of intros, and then they might get split up along the way.

Or, option "B" is that it is a "team" story, and this is the "team meeting" intro.

It also could be some combination of the two.

In that vein, I think the main character MIGHT change with the arc, as in, we are in Cassie's home country right now, so this is going to focus on her. Who knows, maybe she is the team leader--it sure feels like that is the direction it is going, just based on the earlier scenes--though, I hope they keep it looser than that. We don't need "furry girl avengers."

I can bug the creators about it this weekend, because, according to their @ageofarcadia Twitter, they are going to be at Further Confusion. It a looooong drive for me, but I am going to be leaving later today to spend the weekend at FC.

For Valentine's Day they also made a special comic that seems to be aside from the main story. I guess this is a window into Flora's personality more than Cassie's, who seem reasonably in character for what we have seen of her. I did not expect this with Flora though--but I kinda like it.
