What happens to movie props after they are done filming? Do they get destroyed? Are they sitting in storage somewhere? Are they given away?

I wouldn't mind finding out what happened to this Heidi costume. For a friend, ya know.

Most props are shoved into storage, so long as they aren't delicate or made of a substance that will degrade; some will be used in later films or TV shows. Particularly distinctive props may be sold or auctioned off. Costumes are a bit of a different animal (heh), though. Fabric doesn't store very well. It's possible they get taken apart and the materials re-used.

However, all of this is just what I know from tangential sources; I'm not in the actual business so I can't be sure.

That's more or less accurate. Though many studios and companies actually retain manufacturing data for replication. This makes sense during the movie in the event a replacement is needed, and for later if they want to make merchandise for other products.

I worked at a FedEX and actually had a production company guy come in and ship the molding for a proton pack. Apparently some of the originals went missing and they wanted to make some new ones in anticipation of promoting the Ghostbusters Video Game, along with some of the other promotions they do (mostly the anniversary editions)

Some of the other stuff gets taken home by employees. Source: dad did a lot of propmaking and carpentry.

where is this from?

 No.51167>>51170

They save what can be reused, dismantle or alter what can be reused in a different form, etc. The Ghostbusters PKE meter shows up in They Live, Star Trek altered costumes and models as needed.

Some things are kept for historical value but these props were never designed for longevity. The original Alien suit is falling apart, for example.

Even if it is saved for historical purposes it may get thrown out or destroyed anyway if the new guy changes his mind- see the Phantom of the Opera original set being torn down to make space for a fucking roller coaster no one needed. Yeah I know a movie set isn't a prop but come on, why destroy history for needless shit? Props are always tossed to make warehouse space and no one hears about it. There was a time when the BB threw out or taped over actual film reels of episodes or movies to make space, which is why so many old Dr Who episodes were lost, and the entirety of Monty Python was nearly trashed by this policy.

Many end up in the wild, but without some sort of paperwork or other material to authenticate it, it's basically worthless. See half the shit that ends up on Pawn Stars that someone insists is genuine but can't prove.

fun bit of info- the phasers used in Star Trek Enterprise cost a fair bit of money to build. Once the toy versions came put, they stopped dropping big bucks to make their props and used the toys.

>the phasers used in Star Trek Enterprise cost a fair bit of money to build

That's pretty funny, because early Trek props were just cobbled together from whatever shit they had lying around. Geordi's VISOR on TNG was literally a large hair barrette spray-painted gold. Studios around the turn of the century all at once seemed to become bent on spending their money in all the wrong fucking places.

Blame it on 2 things-

1) viewers demanding more detail and such in what they saw so parts had to become more elaborate

2) the lawsuit-happy nature of society that sprung up suddenly. "You used our copyrighted item in your show? Pay us or we'll take you to court!" became a costlier endeavor than building a unique piece.

What's this pic from? Is this an actual porn video?

Yeah, this is the reason why the new Star Trek had to redesign EVERYTHING. While the term "Klingon" belongs to Trek, the artistic design of the species belongs to the designer, who would have to get paid royalties if it were re-used. It's the same reason why a re-make of an anime will use different music, slightly-different character designs, and different VAs; the same thing will happen if a franchise gets picked up by a different studio. The problem is, all the designers of today SUCK, so basically everything is inferior to the old stuff.

Fun fact, it was directed by Peter Jackson of all people.

I didn't know that. I just assumed Abrams did a lot of "change for the sake of change" shit. Well, some of it certainly was and it doesn't make the time travel reboot films any less shit or pointless. The writing still sucks, it was the same 2 asshats that ruined Xena season 5 and did the Transformers movies, so don't expect quality.
