What is the history of the furry fandom?

How has it changed since the early days?

Do you like where the furry fandom is headed or not?

Do you like how it is right now?

Pretentious 90s era furries are intolerable, at least now people are more overt about sex and more honest - plus the art is a whole lot better. There are thousands of furry artists online, most of them practically unknown, that are better than all of the most famous 'greymane era' furry cartoonists.

>What is the history of the furry fandom?

As far as I know the modern day furry fandom was spun off from animation conventions for cartoons. This is where the first furry porn was known to circulate. It was mostly fanart of cartoon characters

The modern furry fandom didn't really take off until the internet, and didn't really explode until internet speeds were fast enough that images could be readily observed. It's why almost everyone heard about furries in the 2000s despite existing in the 90s.

I've heard that the fandom's porn obsession was always there but it was more underground until people started to recruit directly from fetish communities to join their conventions. Like they'd advertise around BDSM events and so forth for their furry communities. After that it started to become more upfront and in your face and now it's mostly all the fandom is known for.

Early day furry fandom required doing things like using Telnet to access a Furry MU prior to the invention of chat clients.

The history of early Furry fandom is surprisingly well documented here

The porn is more widespread now than it was back then and more accepted. All the big names back then went on to become internet famous, even the shitty deviantart-tier "artists", simply because they were here first; people were so desperate for porn that anything drawn slightly better than stickmen would be enough to get you noticed, since professionals didn't exist for this stuff back then (and arguably, don't exist for this kind of stuff now). On that note most of their art has since stagnated in quality. Ken Sample (Cougr on FA) for example draws the same now as he did back in 1999 and before, a whole 18 years. People still suck his dick because he was one of the first to come up with the idea of making macro furries. Doug Winger (Justdoug on FA) is widely known for being one of the first few to come up with the idea of hyper furries and many people suck his dick because of that, even though the quality is shit (his characters look like really skinny cartoons with massive unaesthetic hypertube+balls slapped on them on angles that shouldn't be considered artistically possible), to put it in perspective, even Gideon draws better. Doug is dead now though but people will never stop referencing him even though his art is sub par and hyper art has come a long way since then.

>Do you like where the furry fandom is headed or not?

It's animals, and that's all it will ever be. As for where it's headed, it's headed for whatever fad is in this month. Is it FnaF? Is it sergals now? When's the next new videogame or movie starring anthros going to come out? Take a wild guess what will happen to the fandom when it does...

>Do you like how it is right now?

The art is good enough, and I have no doubt it will expand to other mediums or styles as time progresses, so in light of that, despite all its flaws, yes. Furries occupy a large portion of my time and life, without them there's not too much for me to go on.

This is one thing a lot of newbies fail to understand. When old farts talk about the "good old days" of the fandom in the 90's, they rarely mention that the art was fucking TERRIBLE. The digital revolution with art in the 2000's, switching from literal pencil-and-paper sure did allow a lot of bad artists to become popular, but it also raised the bar for others to near-professional-animator levels. Furry artists are producing things nowadays that would have been simply impossible 20 years ago, without photoshop and the like.

I miss the mid-late 2000 fandom. Artists were focused to be artists and not postmodernist bullshit pandering machines.

>>47092

Sergals have been around for almost 15 years, they don't fall into the FNaF, Undertale, Zootopia or whatever monthly internet craze. Shit, the only time they were "suddenly popular" with furries was when Twitter sjws called them nazis and still, most furries don't know or care about them.

>Furries occupy a large portion of my time and life, without them there's not too much for me to go on.

That sounds fucking terrible.

Nothing changed about the furry fandom. Everything going wrong with it right now is repeated across countless fandoms across the internet. Society is just going to hell.

Sergals outside of low quality sparkledog OCs are more of a /tg/-tier thing, anyway.

It's not the sort of deal I think the furry lot could ever get in, as they're supposed to be their own race, not just humans but with fur.

Ultimately, even old furshit revolved around what were effectively just humans in fur.

Are you posting from an alternate universe where sergals on /tg/ or even /tg/ are still a thing and not just a consumed and forgotten dumpster fire?

please pull me over there

Tier.

As in, within the same vein.

Sadly, as you say, it was dropped by large on /tg/.

Too bad, really. Sergals are interesting. Should talk about it some time again there. Honestly, I bet you could get away with a thread, as Chrow is pretty chill.

>>47237

If by get away you mean a thread that will get 3 shitpost replies and then get lost on the catalog then yeah maybe.

There are not many /tg/ sergalfags left after 8 years and there were not even that many 8 years ago. The only places left where people have "serious" discussions about them are private group chats and it's about the comic lore.

>'lost in the catalogue'

Nah bro, it's too slow for that.

You'd definitely get some interest, though it may be a tad slow at first. That's just the nature of the board in its current state.
