Frankly, there's many on both sides of the argument and usually it' the ones that complain about the other side the loudest.
I'd love to see more practical clothing too. If part of the characters anatomy doesn't make sense with human clothes (usually tail, legs, snout or ears) most artists will leave it out at best. Like charcters that are completely dressed up but barefoot since the creator couldn't think of any shoes for them. I never even saw anyone bother with tailarmor. I once tried to have a "Anthro Armor" thread on /furry/ and got fuck all. Pic 5 by a very based drawfag is unrelated to that thead.

I could see a kind of leather armor working. It might still be heavy enough to take getting used to, but it would be relatively easy to put on and shouldn't restrict movement too much. This is the method I use for most of my worldbuilding projects that involve anthropomorphic characters.
Of course then you have the common trope that lizard-men have naturally strong armor, which I always found just a little suspect. I mean, yeah, scales are stronger than skin, but in any setting where we've at least advanced to the longbow natural scales aren't going to cut it anymore.

I did know that, in fact. In fact I've recommended it to Western men who were considering getting cut. It's clearly the better option, hands-down. Personally it's always a gradient. Sometimes I'm in the mood for one or the other. I always chalk it up to personal style. Just like with humans. Furries aren't exactly any worse than other fantasy stuff. Some people want fantasy others want something more...reasonably realistic. I find well drawn external and human like genitals more appealing overall. Though I often appreciate other artists who attempt to make more exotic aspects of a species into the design aspect.

Anthropomorphism means adding human characteristics to something. That includes a straight up animal with sapience, or the bipedal form we call anthros for lack of a better term.
Much of the appeal in designing an anthro is taking defining aspects of an animal and translating those to bipedal/humanoid stature, not to slap the same pot of human traits onto an animal over and over. It's a balancing act depending on stylistic choice and story concepts, but is an important consideration in design work.

Ultimately, you pick and choose what traits you add for your 'anthropomorphism'. Some people prefer less human traits, some prefer more. See monsterfags, for instance.
That said, though: I've never liked the term "anthropomorphism" anyway. I don't like limiting it to human-based, so to speak.
I prefer to look at it more through the lens of "let's take X creature and evolve them to human level". Basically, make each race their own, separate from humanity. Go full /tg/ on its rear, start some worldbuilding, think about how a race of say, crow people who lack actual arms but have wings, would live.
It's more fun, to me.

It's likely different for everyone. I always thought it was because people want to fuck their dog --- but a version of their dog that is the right size and proportion to allow it comfortably, has arms and hands to cuddle them with, and is capable of both feeling and verbally expressing love. Things like this don't require human traits like eyelashes and boobs any more than it requires a human pancreas. Once you've made the animal bipedal and sapient, that's IT; any additional changes are pointless.
