I like guns and like buying furfag art, but I've found it near impossible to take any pic with anthros+guns very seriously. Rarely do I see it done in a way that doesn't feel dumb to me. I'm wondering if this is merely a case of all the stuff out there with guns either trying too hard to look serious for my tastes or it's literally loony tunes stuff. I'm wondering if some middleground is my answer here, like some sort of fudd shit that's just some dumb furry with a gun without trying to look epic or anything in the process.

Well what do you expect exactly? If you draw the gun in a realistic fashion it'll be "tryhard" by your standards, and if you draw it off model then it'll be some looney tunes crap by default.

I think that anyway you try and do it you'll just come off looking like you are compensating for a small peepee if you try and make it look cool.
Think alot of it has to do with people just trying to slap pre-existing war stuff that we're used to seeing people dressed in. No one tries to design their own uniforms or weapons, if people did that It would look less off because the uniforms and guns aren't ones you've seen before so your brain doesn't have any previous references to compare it too and feel that it looks off.
That and of course the design of the character plays a large part. If you got something like the sergal picture here >>108534 then I'm sure some 8 year old who's a fan of Shadow the hedgehog would cream his pants over it but not many others would. They'd see what is clearly something designed by someone who wants to compensate for a small peepee.
best thing you can do is round up as many examples of people doing furries with guns in a bad way and then not doing what they are doing.

I think the best way to describe what I would want it something that isn't trying to really be cool at all . This is very subjective and I'm very autistic about some things, so I'm not going to try too hard to explain the minutiae of my tastes. I have gotten a few gun things in the past that were more on the military side of things, but I just had the artists draw a bastardized version of the Valhallan dudes' uniforms from 40k and armed with something vaguely like an SVT-40 I think. I have an artist lined up for a piece at some point that would be something more along the lines of just cleaning a gun or going on a hunting trip. A lot of me being picky here I think just comes down to personal taste.
