Hey /fur/ I want to do some game dev. I think it’d be fun to just do something off-the-cuff and spontaneous, where you guys suggest and discuss features, I implement them and put out an updated demo, you guys try out the demo, and repeat. We don’t have to do any kind of elaborate design or even have any real set definite end goal in mind or anything like that. Just play the game and think of what immediate things you might want to add/change---whatever you’d like to do in it next.
So we will need to do a bit of setup first to get the ball rolling I suppose---figure out what exactly we’re going to start with and get that first version out. I’m thinking a virtual pet game, cause I think that’d fit this kind of spontaneous and ever-expanding model well, and also just cause I’d really like to make and play with virtual pets. But I’m totally open to other starting ideas as well! So give me your thoughts/questions about all of this and let’s get started!

While I'm not convinced that it's an optimal idea for a "small scale" project, I'll pitch it anyway:

This is more like it. Even better would be to break it down into simpler and more specific steps, something like “Make it so you can give headpats or tummy rubs. Make a pet that prefers headpats and another pet that prefers tummy rubs.” And then from there we could go into designing what those pets would look like even, perhaps.

Give us a game where we can click on a picture of an animal, click somewhere else and have them move there. We'll see how long that takes and we'll actually get a ball rolling. We'd probably have to move at increments of this size anyway, otherwise we're not really making a game together if everyone suggests an entire separate game idea of their own and they just get mashed together.

Yeah I was hoping people could offer up some really barebones suggestions and decide on one together, rather than offering whole game ideas that would take weeks/months of development to get to what they described and mashing those together. Something like “Pet sim and the pet is a slime and you can pet it and it smiles and makes hearts” and then we might go about designing what exactly that slime looks like.
I’d like for as much of the board to get involved as possible, and for us to be able to agree on some barebones idea like that to begin with, and then from there everyone can suggest whatever little features each of them would like to see added on, and just keep going from there.
But yeah if you want to see how fast I could cook something up like that, like to gauge my ability, that’s understandable. My computer’s in repair right now so I’ll have two find one to use real quick for today, but if I had to estimate, it’d take me maybe ten minutes to do what you said---picking some animal picture off the Internet and then placing it in a level and coding it in so that when you click it and click somewhere else it moves to there.
By the way, I can do either 3D or 2D. I can 3D model and stuff, and as long as we were to pick a relatively simple artstyle, it shouldn’t be much more time-consuming than 2D, so it’s really just up to what the board wants.

fluffy blob with ears would be good virtual pet like the things from club penguin, but with ears. Make it something where you have to feed your pets regularly or they starve. Save the time when game is shut down and compare it on startup as well as some regular interval, but not every frame as that level of granularity isnt needed for hunger.

So how about goal 1 is to make our interactable object. Go into godot and fiddle around until you can make it so that clicking a picture on screen will produce an output. Maybe if you're feeling adventurous you can make that output show up in some UI element.
Once we can click an object everything is just extensions of that.

more and more other kinds of beings are met, and the game is like an fps with maps being planets
each race is capable of moving around the planet with ease, and most of the worlds are huge and to basically scale
sort of like Tribes Ascend, which I've never played but the huge maps and fast moving players is where I'm getting at
team based, and each team could have up to 20 people
with how extreme and powerful each person from each race is, game may also feel like something straight out of dc, marvel, db, fist of the north star, one piece, jojo, bleach, naruto, etc

You're correct! Think that you can export your model in .dae or obj format? If you're using 2.79b then you need the better collada exporter for blender, it's included by default with the 2.8 release candidate though

I finally got jumping and movement working, beforehand you used to jump infinitely and no collision worked.
Note to self: Always add raycasts to check collisions whenever you deal with 3d

It's fine if you don't like it, but make your own prototype so that others can decide the best course to take. I've seen threads like these and I often get disappointed that nothing comes out of the ideas posted here. It's never too late for you to make your own. I'd rather see a competing project than ideas that aren't used. If you're bored, just code, use documentation, and debug.

I tried those but they didn't work for me. You could do it with KinematicBody node as it has specialized functions for it, but you get less control over the movement. Raycasts worked the best for me.
