What's better? Increasing weights or doing more reps of the same weight. Can someone explain why?

I'm foung the 5x5 and got in an argument with my father over what's better. Right now I can squat 135. Do I keep increasing to 140, 145, etc? Or do I increase the number of reps from 5x5 to 5x6, 5x7, etc?

I'm starting to hate lifting because I keep getting into this argument often during my daily phone calls.

Also got another question. Do I really have to eat more? I want to gain muscle and lose weight at the same time.

Can I just have a protein shake for breakfast, a slice of turkey breast for lunch, and turkey and a shake for dinner and call it good?

If I have at most 1000 calories a day as long as there's protein, I should be fine, right?
