Ask a film expert anything about film, screenwriting, recommendations, opinions etc.

Source: Film school graduate and director/writer of two feature films and numerous short features that have been accepted into festivals.

Favourite active screenwriters..I don't think I can name anyone. Are there any good screenwriters working today?

Cliches I dislike…dream sequences, murder plots, films about suicide, using the "parent just died" backstory to create some sort of emotional connection to the protagonist, children who are smarter than they should be, meta-writing i.e. a screenplay about a failed writer/artist, the "you think the character is dead but he's actually alive" third act plot gimmick..lots of others but I don't want to go on and on.

There must be. But aside from writer/directors I can't name very many.

> meta-writing

Yeah that's annoying. It seems like the majority of musicals are about performing a musical.

So what type of films do you make?

 No.4546>>4557

There aren't that many good directors making films today either.

I usually make short experimental "high concept" type films i.e. what if this happened. I try to make them as natural as possible - nothing over the top, no action sequences, just characters dealing with things in a realistic and believable way. My goal is to move to America and shoot high budget sci-fi films.

Top 5 is easier, in no order:

Aguirre, the Wrath of God

Raise the Red Lantern

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

2001: A Space Odyssey

tame taste for an expert

I could list more obscure films that I claim to like, but that would be dishonest.

Can we watch your work somewhere?

Any interesting stories about getting funding or getting into festivals?

How can I convince people that nudity in film isn't always used for the purpose of titillation?

 No.4553>>4554

This is a very safe /tv/ taste, if you ask me.

 No.4554

I would have to agree. I'm not sure writing and directing two films would qualify as being an expert. Makes you a professional though which is cool. But most of your criticism >>4544 is plot-heavy which I would not think an expert would be so focused on.

would you recommend film school

 No.4556

I've wondered about the directing duties on a big budget production. With hundreds or thousands of people under you, it seems like it would be like a CEO.
