So I just finished watching Drowning by Numbers, and in my opinion it was damn good, probably about 8.5/10.
Really good use of colour and generally nice shots with loads of nice little details to notice and weird symbolism, excellent stuff in my book.
It's the only Peter Greenaway I've seen thus far, what do you guys think about it and Peter Greenaway's films in general?

Be patient, my friend. This board has just been conceived. Very few of us are browsing at the moment, so don't be psyched if replies come kind of slow.
I am not knowlegdeable on Greenaway's cinema. The only film I've seen from his directing is The Belly of an Architect, but I was feeling sick, fever-ish by the time I watched it, hence my remembrance might be biased. It's a unique film like no other. I remember that, at first, I was put off by its viewing. It was cold and unremarkable and unusually themed; I didn't know what to make of architectural or eschatologic dilemmas. But afterwards I really enjoyed it. I began to understand implied metaphors, and started to feel for the main character. Each shot was packed with subtle symbology, which pointed to the state of our culture in insightful ways. Its photography was outstanding, as if cinematography itself was speaking for the film, growing more intrincate and weird in tune with character's progression. Bretty gud.

>>383fair point, but I was expecting some response, I have been here since pretty early on so yeah. And all those points pretty much go for Drowning by Numbers too there's this odd, intricacy, detail and beauty to pretty much every shot, damn good film, really looking forward to seeing some more of his stuff if they are similar as what you say seems to imply.

>>384Gee, I'm looking forward to it as well. But, then again, I've got such a huge backlog… it overwhelms me to a degree that I end up watching nothing most of the times. There's an unimaginable amount of worthwhile, beautiful cinema —I doubt it alone can be absorbed on a lifetime.

>>389Exactly the same with me, my list of films to watch is a 13 page word document and some of the entries are just directors names, there's just so damn much to get through.

i've seen several other Greenaways but not this one. my favorite has to be The Belly of an Architect. all his early-to-earlyish stuff is worth seeing, and i used to think he was one of the best going, but now i find him too cold for my taste.

>>374I think he's incredibly tiring. I don't agree with the worldview he pushes in the work of his that I've seen and if he was a good filmmaker he would be able to at least get me interested. He also just fills his frames with clutter (something that you can see in your OP pic), which I also can't stand.
He's definitely not my cup of tea.

well, i enjoyed it. i don't mind the clutter. the film seems to be packed with ideas, so much to absorb through the eyes and the mind.
i'm getting back into this director since the hd transfers make his films look far better than the old DVDs. and i didn't even recognize the name "sacha vierny" when i started watching greenaway films.

hm, i agree he's had ups and downs but i've enjoyed some of his recent stuff too.

I wonder whatever happened to our friend The Cinephilic Brit. I imagine he's still somewhere …. out there ….
I'd like to think he could be spotted ducking into the BFI sporting a black bolwer and umbrella.
Or maybe he's eating fish & chips at the Lamb & Flag reading Sight & Sound…
We may never know for certain.

It's weird how much this one reminds me of the films of Wes Anderson
