 No.1715>>1716 [Watch Thread][Show All Posts]

anybody looking forward to this? was tempted to post on /lit/ because it's based on Thomas Pynchons book by the same name, but I didn't.

 No.1716

>>1715 (OP)
I'm not really looking forward to it, but I will definitely see it. I wish he would've kept Mălaimare instead of bringing back Elswit. I expect a really good time at the movies.

 No.1721

It was probably the single worst film trailer I've seen this year, and PTA's films I've seen have been mostly mediocre or below average so probably not.

 No.1753

I want to be able to love it, but after seeing the dull white colour pallate shown constantly throughout the trailer, I don't think it'll be nearly as psychedelic and colourful as I would've imagined from the book. I'll still watch it though.

 No.1759

I'll certainly watch it, but without seeing the trailer first. I prefer to watch films knowing as little as possible beforehand.

I like PTA quite a bit, even though The Master didn't amaze me as much as some of his other stuff.

 No.1765

I enjoyed both There Will Be Blood and The Master tremendously, but as far as this trailer reveals I am not too hopeful about Inherent Vice. To be fair, it looks pretty terrible, from the chosen art style to the general tone. I would never watch a film like this one —although you can't really judge by a trailer— if it didn't have PTA signature on it.

 No.1793

I still don't know what to think about this director. On one hand, his movies have beautiful photography and great acting, but on the other hand they feel so shallow, like they don't have something relevant to say.
The only exception is There Will Be Blood, which I really liked, even though it followed the old-fashioned, done-to-death premise of "ambition leads to self-destruction".

Saw it at NYFF. PTA is my favorite filmmaker but this movie was a mess. It's simply a story that (I assume) works better within the confines of literature. the acting is solid and the camerawork is solid but structure and pacing go out the window and ruin it. It's a shame too because now we probably have to wait years for another PTA film although watching Joaquin Phoenix do nitrous is pure gold as well as tons of blow with Martin Short. It's mostly a shame because PTA obviously put a lot of love into it, you can tell because he's done ensembles before and he (probably) stuck so close to the book it just didn't translate well.
