Recently, it has kinda come to my attention that I've gotten stuck in playing my current character. I've played the same character for nearly 9 years now and it's more or less become a familiarity thing where I can just second hand react as that character in an RP. It's comforting to not have to put a lot of effort into a character in terms of how they act, simply because you've done pretty much everything with them.

There's kinda an issue though… I made that character 9 fuckin years ago, and while they've changed, they don't necessarily reflect what I'd want to play as much as they once did, but goddamn is it comfy to do stuff as them. I really need to get out of my comfort zone, and I was wondering if anyone here would have some advice or tips on the subject?

How many people have had their own characters kinda take on a life of their own, apart from what you wanted? Tips, stories, and whatever!

Wanting something different doesn't mean having to abandon the old.

You don't trash your old beloved toys - you put them on a shelf. Treasure the past joys, sometimes take them out for another ride.

Just make a new character, get some play.

Plant a new tree in the garden, you have space for it without cutting the old.

Experience, well. Not really, though I may be starting to move in that direction, I haven't gone deep.

Saw from a distance - a friend of mine got superfocused on one character, which kinda blew our attempts to play for the time. Solution is she made a new one (yeah like I'm telling you to) and we're planning some with it.

There's no limit to characters you can have.

Make a new character.

Challenge yourself to try new things and stretch your creativity. It's easy to stay with what you're familiar with, but it's often an lot more fun to try new things. And just because you try new things doesn't mean you have to stick with them forever. Maybe you make a new character and don't have tons of fun with them. That's ok. You can make more and keep experimenting.

Turn them into an imaginary friend and hang out while RPing as another character. Maybe let them help you with the RP.
