Yeah, saw it when it came out. The visuals are great, they get the 70s atmosphere down perfectly. But I think they got too indulgent with it, shoehorning a Thatcher quote that just doesn't belong and fucking with the story to make the class war aspect more blatant. Of course, it's much harder to portray a subtle buildup in a movie than in a book, but they could have avoided being so hamfisted with it.
Cronenberg made a good decision to set Crash in the then-contemporary 90s, and not do a period piece. I think Ballard is deeply misunderstood as a writer. Crass political commentary was never his style, and he was influenced by everything from Jungian psychology to post-structuralism. He was aware of how corporate propaganda and cult of celebrity shaped our world, and predicted the rise of social media in 70s. And on top of all that, he saw more shit by the age of 12 than most people do in the lifetime.
