There is no feeling of community even in small towns now, and people are as big of strangers to their next door neighbours as to someone in another country. well, my reasoning was, if you are a cripple or mentally retarded, army will not take you after the evalution in the recruitment process. They will not want to take a risk. So, who goes to war? People who passed conscription. Who is that? Able-bodied men who die in war. Of course you can argue genetic duds never procreate even when all able bodied men would die but maybe it was less extreme in the past compared to today's situation
