Anyone know what's up with lainchan these past few days ?

The site seems to be down, and #lainchan on freenode won't let me post.

Sorry if off-topic, this is really the only place I thought to ask.

Watching lainchan from the start, I think it was it's theme combined with the times that made it fail so spectacularly. Cyberpunk is many things to many people. SEL is EVEN MORE things to many people, you can interpret it a million ways. The narrative shifts slightly every time i watch it. Combine a theme with a million interpretations with a time where politics is consuming every aspect of life, polarizing even the most trivial, non-political topics/opinions, and you end up with a community which lacks consensus and is hostile to even itself. It's been at least a year since the last time i made a post on lainchan that wasn't met with hostility or abrupt dismissal. You can see it in the threads on /q/ about rebuilding the site, there is less discussion and more just autists screeching their opinions into the web. Each poster has their own idea of what lainchan should be and who should be allowed to participate and no compromise is possible.

 No.46422

Well, as of today, there's a NEW Lainchan on The Wired at Lainchan.jp being run by "a collective of former administrators and moderators." They hijacked part the Lainchan.org site for a certain period of time earlier in order to redirect to and promote the .jp one.

Appleman's first act on taking control of the old place was to delete the board list, and write a long-winded pretentious post about how trying to decribe his thought process that led him to do so wouldn't do it justice. This did not fill me with confidence. The lack of backups was an eye-opener that confirmed my lack of confidence in him.

And whatever idiocy Appleman pulled, the .jp mods are the one doing redirects, and redirecting lewd.sx and the radio, and doing most of the whining. I don't really evaluate the success of a community based on it's traffic. I evaluate it based on the quality of its content. It may be too early to tell, but I have high hopes for lainchan.jp. Perhaps /cyber/ and /cyb/ can have some kind of synergy with one another.

Both Kalyx and Appleman have demonstrated some truly breathtaking incompetence and poor judgement, in each of their own special ways. Appleman is a fucking state actor, I love how a cyberpunk community just misses that.

That would be hilarious.

What I think about aplebaum is this: He's a rich kid who has always relied on (his parents') brouzouf to get what he wants. This time, kalyx offered lainchan for sale and aplebaum just jumped with the idea of playing admin of a popular, and not too bad, imageboard.

He wanted to play admin, and he wanted to have lainchan not unlike a child grabs something and yells "MINE!". This is evident by the way he refused from the beginning to work with the mods (and so he ignored all of them and their help). He lacks one very important quality of administration and it is to trust others. He sees himself as the head of lainchan now, and he plays with it at his will. He didn't even stop to think about the responsibilities he'd had to carry (and so started whining about having to moderate the site), and as a result he also had the site wiped. He instead started playing with the site (like hiding all the boards) and then put on his authority pants and said stuff like "against my better judgement…".

When he bought the place, he said something like "I just love the community and don't want it to die", yet if he would have really loved the community, he would just let it go with someone competent, offer some other kind of help. He would have contributed to the codebase. Instead, he just bought the site and said something like "I don't care if you're an oldfag, I won't listen to you, you have to earn trust by contributing".

If he really loved the community, he wouldn't have refused help from the moderators, and he would have certainly run a referendum over the hiding of the boards, instead of doing everything on his own just because he owns the place.

Some of the apple supporters say that he genuinely cares about lainchan, but I can see through it, and it really seems to me like lainchan is really just a toy for him to play admin because he has never had to have a real responsibility in his life and he thought it would be a piece of cake, which in turn led to the wipe and the split. This is one of his rick kid little games.

>But .jp seems to have a whole lot of competent admins and mods that can stop whatever dumbness Kalyx might perpetrate before it happens.

That will not happen because the instant someone does something questionable, they will all defend each other. They're all just circle-jerk buddies who will side side of the rest of the administration at .jp no matter what, otherwise nobody would look at the things Kalyx has done and say "okay this is an adequate person to have responsibility at this site"

Lainchan is going even further down the shitter. Appleman1234 is turning the site into a safe-haven for pedophiles and then condescendingly calling users who call him out on it "drama starters."

Lel, this looks like Lainchan Drama Alert.

On less recent news, someone made a petition for Appleman to jack off like kalyx did.

Appleman managed to get the petition deleted, deleted all screenshots of the petition, and threatened the user for "diffamation".

Appleman really is a shitty admin.

.jp is chill but now there's talk of changing the name of the site to distance it from .org. idk how i feel about that. .jp is in such a state of infancy, with not enough posters (or at least knowledgeable ones) to encourage varied discussion. plus, the guy who sold .org is an admin of .jp lol

 No.46970

it's a total fucking reddit board tbh, and it wont ever change, it's conceptually damned to be like that. cancerous buddy buddy admin circle, fucking kalyx spic; a CUNT in the admin/mod circle, mods deleting posts for fun repeatedly in the same threads because they trigger them etc etc etc.

and even strictly technically nothing fucking works on that shit site, it's not compatible with extensions for imageboards (which are a must basically and always were) and the board's native options are not nearly enough, contrary to 8chan or 4chan for example.

I tried to like lainchan.jp, I really did, but it's damned reddit board, I dont know why with other shit/bad boards I just immediately stopped and forgot about them, but in this case for some reason I tried for a bit.>>46967

 No.46973

>>46972

>someone doesn't like a thing i like.

>must be /pol/

This kind of shit is why both lainchans should just die off. The moment any controversy or heated debate developed the community started screeching about /pol/ and sjws. Now the site has literally split into two, each claiming the other is /pol/ or sjws. And this shit began well before kylax accidentally the server. It started fairly early on with one very mentally damaged tranny and a couple of /pol/tards couldn't stop spilling their spaghetti every time someone triggered them and just gradually spiraled into an unmanageable shitstorm.

The same shit is happening across the web, small communities ripping themselves apart because users think that everyone who disagrees with them is just a shill, troll, sjw, /pol/, fascist, etc. and that their weirdly specific set of ideals is the TRUE community's values. If this shit keeps going soon all that will be left are safespaces for the various political camps and communities so tightly regulated that posts containing words not on the white list will result in insta-ban.

 No.46975

>>46973

>Now the site has literally split into two, each claiming the other is /pol/ or sjws.

That's total bullshit and you know it. The site split was due to Appleman was making utterly insane decisions (like getting rid of the board list) and his total incompetence at anything admin-related (such as having backups). Politics had absolutey nothing to do with the split. Frankly, both lainchans remain some of the most apolitical community sites I've ever seen.

 No.46976

>>46975

I wasn't trying to say that the polarization caused the split, but rather has made the userbases of both sites more hostile to one another. Also, appleman is a jackass, but he isn't the only one to blame here. As far as i'm concerned lainchan has never really had good administration.

>both lainchans remain some of the most apolitical community sites I've ever seen.

You must be new then. one of the big controversies under kylax was the creation and then deletion of /civ/. The entire reason the board was made is because there was to much political discussion on /cyb/ that would swiftly veer off topic. And it was deleted because it seems to make things worse rather than better. One of .jp's affiliates, 0chan, was created as a spin off of the anarchy threads on .org because it was decided anarchists were string up too much shit. The intersection of tech and politics and trying to moderate in an unbiased way has been the bane of the moderators since lainchan's inception.

 No.46978

I didn't say "entirely apolitical sites". I said "some of the most apolitical community sites I've seen". That's a subtle but important qualification.
