It was the original "boycott" posts that caused all this shit to explode, not so much because a few shops were planning to not stock the book, but because D&C posted the addresses of all those involved. This means his followers, who are a rabid lot, had the names and the workplaces of "enemies". This was on May 9th. Diversity and Comics also encouraged the collection of the information on other shops choosing not to carry his book.
The campaign ended on May 10th. When Mark Waid would use his contacts to kill the book, D&C would call Mark Waid a lier when Waid said he posted the addresses.

Several reasons, but the major one is sustainability. His business model relies on the comics industry to be "sjw" so that he can act as a counter to it. However, as it's been pointed out previously in this thread, sjws power in comics is already waning. This change will be devastating, and he will have to expand his definition of "sjw" to maintain his relevancy. Now, if his books are good, he could rely on the quality of his work to keep his company a float, but his books are shit. So unless something is done, D&C can look forward to a slow decline into bankruptcy.

There's a disturbing element of pettiness to D&C's actions. There was one artist I know that posted 1 comic and it was pirated immediately. They didn't even get sales figures until 3 months later where it said they only sold 5 books and after all amazon got their share, they only made about $11. They just went back to selling print at conventions because they could make more of a profit with 1 sale than what they made off comixology.
This was about 3 years ago. I'm not sure if comixology fixed this issue but I don't see any hard sales to tell how successful comixology really is. But I guess you can sell prints through amazon if they aren't going digital. I haven't checked that long ago but it seems print is making a resurgence, at least in regular books.
