I have to agree with you OP. When the Green Lantern Corps. is used outside of Lantern titles, they are usually cannon fodder to demonstrate the power of the Antagonist.

The involvement of Lanterns in a story usually follows this formula:

1) Lanterns arrive on the scene.

2) Lanterns manifest projectiles and shoot them at the Antagonist

3) The Antagonist is unfazed.

4) Lanterns then create a bubble around the antagonist for containment.

5) The Antagonist busts out.

6) The Antagonist beats up the Lanterns.

7) End scene.

Any recommendations of good lantern stories would be appreciated.

Kyle Rayner's run as the sole Green Lantern is pretty fun, though I think it had too many crossovers and sucks Hal's dick too much. It also ends on a sad note.

Then there's Mosaic, where Jon Stewart becomes a Guardian. I don't know if it's good, but damn it's weird.

Actually, Johns took a big dump on all of those villains, especially Kyle's rogues, like Nero, Effigy, Sledge, and Fatality.

Green Lantern as a series actually used to be about the main hero and the creative ways he had to use his powers to save the day. With a neat human supporting cast, developing plot threads, a main character with a personality, and really cool villains (particularly during the Alan Scott era where characters like Vandal Savage and Solomon Grundy debuted).

But that changed as the series gradually became all about the Corps and it eventually became Star Wars in tights with the color spectrum as the force.

Kyle Rayner is very similar to Tim Drake. Both had pretty big shoes to fill in, did so pretty good and then they got written by someone else and metaphorically dumped in the trash.

Now that writers write everyone as being perfect in everything, Tim is just 'the weakest Robin' since we never get to see his good sides anymore.

Kyle might have been a rainbow god at one point but he still feels like the weakest (human) green lantern now.
